Rivals preseason rankings Big 12 teams 40-120

    89. Kansas State
Bill Snyder's back. Will the Wildcats be, too? It won't be easy. The Wildcats managed just 17 victories during Snyder's three-year sabbatical, and they lost many of the top players from last season's team. [ 2009 season preview ]

    87. Iowa State
The arrival of new head coach Paul Rhoads has raised hopes in Ames. With some improvement, some luck and a schedule that doesn't include Texas, Oklahoma or Texas Tech, the Cyclones could make a run at bowl eligibility. [ 2009 season preview ]

    No. 74 Texas A&M
No coach should be on the hot seat after just one season, but the pressure on Mike Sherman may rise rapidly if the Aggies don't get off to a quick start. Four of the first five games are at home and the other is a neutral-site meeting. [ 2009 season preview ]

    No. 67 Baylor
If Baylor were in the Big 12 North, a bowl bid would look realistic. The problem for the Bears is they're competing in the much tougher South Division, which could make it difficult for them to get six wins. [ 2009 season preview ]

    No. 42 Missouri
Not long ago, a 10-4 record at Missouri would've seemed like a miracle or a flash in the pan. In 2008, though, it was viewed as a mild disappointment. A third straight trip to the Big 12 title game doesn't seem likely. [ 2009 season preview ]

    No. 41 Colorado
Colorado appears equipped to finish in the upper half of the Big 12 North. If the Buffs can run effectively, it takes a ton of pressure off the QBs, who truth be told don't engender that much confidence. [ 2009 season preview ]

The rest of the rankings haven't come out yet

re: Rivals preseason rankings Big 12 teams 40-120

I'm not sold on Colorado or Mizzou yet. The only thing that has been consistent for CU while Hawkins has been at the helm is inconsistency. They're going to have an excellent running game this year, and their defense could be sneaky good, but their receivers are the worst in the B12 and Cody Hawkins hasn't established himself as a legit QB. For every 4th quarter like he had against us last year, he's had an equally bad quarter where he couldn't complete a pass. I really think these guys are heading for another 5-6 win season.

As for Mizzou, they've got a lot of talented underclassmen, and they're going to need all of them to step up. The offense returns Washington and that's about it, plus they have a new OC. The defense was awful last year and they lost several guys to the draft. Sean Weatherspoon is one of the better LBs in the B12, but I don't know if there's enough around him to solidify that D. I see Mizzou winning anywhere from 5-8 games this year. Too many variables at this point to figure out this team.

Exactly. 46 places better than ISU? Yeah, right. They really showed they were so much better than us last when it came down to the final play.

What do you expect after last year??

He pointed out our offense is really pretty good, our defense poor, and that we actually had a lot of close games last year. He went on to say a possible bowl game is not an unreasonable. IMO that's a glowing review.

Colorado will have a running game, but NO passing game. And I don't think their defense will be that good. I think we beat them at home.

Mizzo is unpredictable with the youngsters.

I'm glad someone put us ahead of K-State finally. We need that game at Arrowhead. If we win 3 non-conference games and beat the Wildcats, we're sitting at 4-1 with chances to beat Colorado and with a lot of luck, Iowa or Mizzo.

Actually, my point is #87 is fairly kind of them. They could have rated us lower than #100 and I wouldn't have batted an eye (personally I think we're better than at least 20 teams out there, but considering we were that bad last season and with a new coach this season...)

Did he read a scouting report for Colorado circa 1999? They'll be battling us and K st. for the bottom of Big 12 north.

Colorado gets ATM, KU, MU and NU at home this year. Doubt they are going to beat TU or OSU if the game was played on mars(or even uranus for that matter) so those are perfect road games to burn up on the schedule.

KSU/ISU on the road as well.

Thats as favorable a schedule as possible in the B12. Considering CU was suiting up about 7-8 OL guys down the stretch last year(injuries), im inclined to believe they should be better offensively. Theres some upside to CU this season.

Re: Rivals preseason rankings Big 12 teams 40-120

Jesse Newell of KUSports.com has a great article on Kansas running back Jake Sharp, one of our top fantasy backs heading into 2009.

Sharp's tireless work ethic is portrayed, and he references the "chip on his shoulder" which motivates him on the football field

"After three years of (Graham) Harrell, some might expect a big regression with (Taylor) Potts operating Leach's offense. But his familiarity with the offense gives him a good chance for success -- like (BJ) Symons, (Sonnie) Cumbie and (Cody) Hodges," ESPN blogger Tim Griffin recently wrote about the new Tech starting quarterback. "The Texas Tech quarterbacks over the years typically have followed a specific pattern developing in Leach's offense.
Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman is intent on giving wide receiver Ryan Tannehill a shot at the starting quarterback job. Sherman told Tannehill, however,it will take a knockout punch to beat him out in 10 days.
Stephen McGee last year, Tannehill this year, what does Sherman have against starter Jerrod Johnson? It seems odd that Sherman would even entertain the idea considering Tannehill was the Aggies' leading receiver (55 catches) in 2008 and Johnson was clearly their best quarterback

Sandvig won't be starting at Safety and Rumple will not be starting at LB. If either of those two get significant playing time, that's probably not going to be a good sign. Sims is going to be starting at safety and hopefully one of the juco's (Taufoou or Lattimer) can step up and contribute at LB.

Maggitt is going to be the surprise player this year. The guy put on at least 40 lbs since he came to ISU.

    21. Texas Tech
Mike Leach has said the Red Raiders will be good again. They will. But any team that lost the talent Tech did has to anticipate some kind of decline, especially with the Big 12 South once again appearing loaded. [ 2009 season preview ]
    27. Nebraska
It wouldn't be a surprise to see the Huskers win the Big 12 North; it also wouldn't be a surprise to see them finish third in the division. Let's split the difference and call for a second-place finish, behind Kansas. [ 2009 season preview ]
