Need new laptop, what's the best value??

We are in need of a new laptop and I would appreciate any recommendations regarding manufacturer and model, as well as the best place to buy. Thanks!

Dell. I don't know exactly what you're going to be doing with the laptop, but for casual to normal business type use, you shouldn't need to pay more than $700-$800 fully loaded.

Edit: probably shouldn't say "fully-loaded", but everything most users would need.

If you get one cheaper than that, get the Complete Care warranty. I've seen so many horror stories, trust me, it's worth it.

I am willing to pay more to avoid the "horror stories".

What capabilities do you need, gaming, or just surfing, and word processor/database?

I've got a Dell Latitude D630 and I have had great luck with it. I've really enjoyed it.

I'd highly recommend Dell's Latitude line, I think it's their small business laptop. I've got extended Gold Technical Support, but haven't had to use it, though I probably wouldn't ever call tech. support unless I needed parts replaced. I used to work for a department on campus and dealt with Dell's tech support extensively, I have always had good experiences with them.

I had a HP Pavilion a while ago, and it was fine, just heavy as hell.

    A few suggestions:

Don't get the nVidia or equivalent off-board video card (It's the non-standard more expensive video card). Off-board cards make your laptop much hotter and are a massive drain on the battery. If money is not an issue, I'd suggest looking into getting a solid state drive. No moving parts = way better battery life.

I know a lot of people that have the EEE tiny laptops and really like them. I just can't stand them because thee keyboards are shrunk down.

I wouldn't suggest going for a screen much bigger than 14.1" if you intend on carrying it, they get heavy fast.

If you have any questions about specifics lemme know, I'd be happy to help

I agree with this. Plus, if you're still affiliated with Iowa State in any way (or even if you're not, since the Dell corporate guys don't really care), you can get a nice student discount on one with Complete Care warranty at the Iowa State dell page: LINK. Click on Recommended Bundles, and there's a good deal on the Latitude E6400 (The new version of the D630).

what Bader said about the weight ... check out how much your old laptop weighs and take note of it if ordering from Dell online.

My wife's Dell laptop is heavy as **** ... but it was cheap

Re: Need new laptop, what's the best value??

I've got a Dell with a shrunken keyboard. I got it a few years back now. Unfortunately, it was before that netbooks existed.
You can do a lot of different things with a laptop. When my wife and I got ours, we were traveling a lot, and so portability was key. I believe we went with a 12" screen. We have had good success with it. We a 3 year at home service plan with it, and took advantage of that a couple times.

If you are looking for something so you can sit on your couch and surf the intertron while watching TV, then get a netbook, anything else is overkill.
If you want more capabilities than that, then choose something more suitable for what you want to do. Just remember, websites load at the same speed on a $300 netbook as they do on a $1200 laptop.

Re: Need new laptop, what's the best value??

I have both a 12.1 HP tablet (That is heavy, and runs hot) and an Asus EEC.

I only use the Asus now (10" screen). As a matter of fact we have 3 of the floating around and they work well.

Yes the keyboard is a little smaller, but it is ok when you get used to it.

I use it for my main office notebook and it runs all spreadsheets, databases and word documents just fine.

If you do go this route I would recommend upgrading the ram and getting a longer battery off the net. For ours we got a 8 and 12 cell that run more than 6-10 hours.

    I am happy with ours.

Re: Need new laptop, what's the best value??

I bought a used Acer Extensa 5420 off of Ebay, which came with no software or Operating System, for $450.

1.9 GHz AMD Turion 64 x2 (dual core)
    15.4 inch glossy screen
    2 GB DDR2 RAM
    160 GB Hard Drive
ATI Radeon XPress 1250 onboard memory (not much to speak of, but better than Intel)
    B/G wireless
    built-in webcam

Overall, a pretty good system for the price. Has DVD burner, built-in card reader, the usual. I've liked it so far, and I think Acer still has good deals on their new computers.

I've also owned a Sager, and you can get those and others from

Custom Laptops by PowerNotebooks.comô - Discount Custom Notebooks & Cheap Laptop Computers
    OpenDNS

A little bit off the heavily beaten mainstream path, but you could potentially find some better bang for your buck there. The only thing about those is that they mostly deal in gaming laptops, or other such deemed as "desktop replacements", so potentially lots of power at the cost of portability or battery life, as opposed to Acer which also likes to deal in netbooks.

Re: Need new laptop, what's the best value??

If interested, I love the Toshiba laptop that I got. I saw on slickdeals.net they have links to computers like a T3400 3 GB Dual Core Processor Toshiba that has 320 GB Hard Drive. The total price on it was in the $438 to $450 range which is great I think. If interested, go on slickdeals.net and just search in the Hot Deals Forum for laptops.
