Rubio to stay in Spain for 2 years

The Minnesota Timberwolves' top draft pick, Ricky Rubio, 18, will remain in Spain to play for his DKV Joventut basketball team for the remaining two years of his contract rather than try to move to the NBA this season, El Periodico reported today. The Barcelona newspaper also says Rubio, who was paid $97,000 last season, plans to withdraw his contract lawsuit against DKV Joventut.

So you draft a player with the 5 pick and won't see him for 2 years Brilliant

The team loses the players rights after two years correct? I've heard Rubio was less than thrilled with Minneapolis, not that I can blame him, so this would allow him to be a free agent? after he plays out his Spain contract.

Any chance the T-Wolves front office is taking personnel advice from Jim Hendry of the Cubs? Sure seems like it.

Rubio will be in the draft again I'm sure. I read some crazy scenario where he could not play pro at all and enter the draft again next year.

I don't expect the situation to play out this way. DKV Joventut refused to enter into any discussion on a contract buyout until Rubio dropped his lawsuit. This is just an early step in a story that will have lots of twists and turns. The T-wolves probably don't mind letting him pick up another year of experience in Spain. They have a 2-3 year timeframe in terms of putting together a competitive roster. Rubio still fits into that schedule.

Re: Rubio to stay in Spain for 2 years

I thought it was one year, unless the rule change recently. I know the Celtics used this to draft Larry Bird the year before he left college. They had the rights to him until the next draft, and were able to sign him before then.

I realize that was a long time ago. More recently, there was a player (I think it was Jim Jackson from Ohio State) who held out and could have re-entered the draft the following year. After going thorugh all of that trouble, he signed I think in the spring before the draft.

Have said all that, the rule could have changed yesterday and I probably wouldn't have heard about it.

I believe its different for players who are under contract in different leagues.

Re: Rubio to stay in Spain for 2 years

Can the T-wolves still trade the rights? Could a team buy-out the second year of his contract in Spain and add him to the roster for the 2010 Free-Agent Madness? If Rubio doesn't play in the NBA sooner rather than later teams are gonna pass on him.

Why did Rubio enter the draft if he is not going to play. Bush league move and I lost any respect for him.

Now saying that I don't even care about the NBA or the Timberwolves. If I had to chose I would be a Celtics fan.

Now that you mention it, didn't the Bulls draft Toni Kukoc a year or two before he ended up in Chicago?

He only wanted to play for the Kings or Knicks. He wants to play in a big market so he doesn't have to play for free cause NBA team can only play 500,000 of his buyout. The Kukoc thing happens all the time, players play their contract out overseas then come to NBA to team that has their draft rights.

Re: Rubio to stay in Spain for 2 years

Rubio is more than likely looking for a trade by saying he will stay in Spain.

It's somewhat complicated, but the T-Wolves will retain his rights for as long as they want if Rubio continues to play professionally in another league. He could play in Spain for another 10 years and the T-Wolves would still have his rights.

The only way Rubio could get out of his rights is if he stopped playing basketball professionally for a year. Once you sit out a year playing no pro basketball, then you can re-enter the draft the subsequent year. It's a huge risk to take. It will be interesting to see if the T-Wolves play chicken with him, or if they trade him instead and pick up a few reliable pieces.

Re: Rubio to stay in Spain for 2 years

Minnesota will still have his rights in 2 years. To be able to go back in the draft he would have to quit playing professional basketball for 1 full year, that won't happen.
