    Any engineers?

Is it possible for ISU to retrofit metal bleachers to bowl in the entire s endzone. I know it isn't ideal, but if it is going to take years before we have the money to precede with Phase 2, metal bleachers would be a cheap temporary alternative that would make the endzone seem more complete. I think the current bleachers cost less than a million.

    Just a thought!

    Re: Any engineers?

Without a bowl (i.e. concrete & steel), what would the metal bleachers be attached to?

And until we sell out the stadium as it is now, why do we need to add seats?

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk, superdorf, clones_jer. That is all.

Not sure what you mean. It would be supported just like it is now with metal supports. This would just be for the lower level obviously. It would make the stadium look more like the original S. endzone plans. Really wouldn't add that many more seats but would give the stadium a better feel without costing us a fortune.

    Re: Any engineers?

I would think that it could be done, but I would also think that the Athletic Department would rather wait and put up permanent seats.

    Re: Any engineers?

It would largely depend on how long before we can finish it. If it is 2 years away there is little point in doing it, but if it can't be done in the foreseeable future, why not. It would look better than what we have.

Kinnick's south endzone had metal-frame seating until 2006.

Have any of the bowling in the south endzone plans really added any additional seats? For the most part don't they just replace hillside "seats" with real seats?

Actually, with the upper deck added the capacity will be over 60,000. Doing the lower deck doesn't really add anything though.

    Re: Any engineers?

I think one of the main reasons to bowl in the end zone is to make the stadium look more big time and be more attractive to recruits. Duct taping in metal bleachers would make Red Green proud, but I think it would be a step in the wrong direction.

I thought the upper deck was like 55,000. My understanding was the the lower deck replaces the south end hills, and the upper deck replaced the north. If we sell those tickets cheap, we will fill it up easily.

In response to "selling out" the stadium, we might not have called it a sellout, but every game last year had all the physical seats full (45K) so we average 2K every game in standing-room-only.

I also think that we're going to see that $ sooner than many on here think. We're due for SOMETHING good at this point (maybe this is hopeless optimism).

    Re: Any engineers?

Yes you could - I believe Illinois also has metal bleachers on their south endzone. Just like the ones you might have at your hight school, but maybe 50 rows high. JMO it doesn't look that good

Is the Iowa game sold out yet?? Im guessing that will be the only possible sell out this year with the worst economy in Iowa in my lifetime!!!

The 55,000 number came from the architect plans. As such they didn't include north end-zone seating, nor standing room. According to the Cyclone.com website when they announced the Jacobson donation, the capacity of the stadium will be over 60,000 when everything is finished.

I hope your right about the donors coming. There are just so many things that need repair and we are seeing donors starting to donate money toward things like a new T&F complex and so on.

    Re: Any engineers?

REAL seats would be around 55k. We could cram in about 60 with remaining hillsides, etc.

    Re: Any engineers?

I agree that it will look tacky to put in steel seating. The cost of constructing the steel bleachers and then tearing them back out would be very costly and a waste of money truthfully. Last I heard that they were planning on putting in aluminum bleachers to save on cost of replacing them ever so often. Don't know if that is true.

Also, on the selling out the stadium, I would rather have an actual seat instead of sitting on grass. I know that the price tag is high on bowling in the south end zone, but will be well worth it and help sell seats along with recruiting as mentioned.
