    Blackhawks Big Day

The Hawks made some HUGE moves today. Signed Hossa to a 12 year deal, Tomas Kopecky to a 2 year deal and John Madden to a 1 year deal. Hossa is better than Havlat and the salary cap hit is lower than what Marty would have signed at.

What are your guys thoughts on the big moves?

Like the move by the Blackhawks. The NHL has gotta put in a limit to length of contracts thou like the nba at 6 or 7 years

12 year contracts are crazy. Is all of that guaranteed?

That's great management in the NHL.

I understand that everyone is doing it (at least Detroit and Pitt), but that's a great way to hamstring your team for years to come.

I wish the Wild were really good as well. It would be great watching them the Blackhawks and Red Wings play. I just wish they were all in the same divison instead of the Wild in the Northwest with Vancouver, Colorado, Edmonton and Calgary

    Tampa Bay did it also.
I hope for the teams that the deal is front loaded. I can see the player getting through 6 years of the deal after putting up great numbers wanting to redo the contract. If that starts happening im going to so hard at the NHLPA and the owners for not putting a cap on the number of years

Most of the deal are front-loaded, like another poster said below (now above). The deal that Zetterberg signed with the Wings keeps him there for the rest of his career, but pays less than a million a year over the last 3 years or so.

    Re: Blackhawks Big Day

The Hossa deal is huge and is an absolute steal. The term is ridiculous on it, but it's fairly obvious to me that it is being used to exploit a loophole rather than an intent for Hossa to play until he's 42. The 12-year length is front-loaded, meaning that Hossa gets paid a healthy sum while the team benefits from a reduced salary cap hit (which takes the average yearly salary across the length of the contract). In seven years or so, the contract value starts to decline, Hossa gets to his late-30s and decides to pack it up, and the money comes off the book. Perfect situation for all parties, but certainly something that needs to be addressed by the NHL in the future.

At any rate, I think Chicago is the big winner after today; Montreal and New York are big losers in my mind.

I would agree that it's a steal for the Blackhawks, but then you have to wonder if Ken Holland really wanted to re-sign a guy who only came to Detroit to chase a Cup.

With the way Detroit drafts and develops players, they've probably got someone ready to plug into his spot.

That division just got a lot more interesting, thats for sure.

I heard they offered a 7 year deal atleast but not sure bout that.

How nice would it be if the Wild,Blues,Blackhawks and Redwings all played in the same divison

Montreal made a bunch of signings thou how many are good im not sure and the trade they made for Gomez was stupid.

The Rangers GM signs good players but usually doesn't sign a good team

The Gomez trade was downright awful, and they heavily overpaid for Cammalleri, Spacek, and Gionta. Gill is a decent signing, but his play has declined. Their forwards are now super-skilled but TINY (first line average of 5'9"/185), while the defense is slow, bordering on immobile.

GM Glen Sather of the Rangers made that great Gomez trade yesterday, but then proved today that he hasn't learned his lesson about the salary cap. Every year on the opening day of free agency he makes a huge splash, and overpays for a big name with huge risks, and this year is no different. Gaborik is great when healthy but a huge risk, especially at $7.5 million over 5 years. Not sure about the Brashear signing either.

The Blackhawks didn't give Marian Hossa a physical until after signing him. And now he needs Surgry. OOPS
