    U.S. Team vs Canada/Serbia

The U.S. team at the World University Games split its first two exhibition games in Serbia, beating Canada and then losing to host Serbia over the weekend. We'll see if Bo Ryan (Wisconsin) goes with the same starting lineup for the tournament later this week, but the first five against Serbia was an interesting mix. He went with Corey Fisher (Villanova) at the point (one assist, zero turnovers, 12 points) and then went big with Da'Sean Butler (West Virginia), Lazar Hayward (Marquette), Trevor Booker (Clemson) and Deon Thompson (North Carolina). Ohio State's Evan Turner and Oklahoma State's James Anderson, the two shooting guards on the team, came off the bench and provided some scoring pop with 16 and eight points, respectively.
The bench also had point guard Talor Battle (Penn State), Robbie Hummel (Purdue) and Quincy Pondexter (Washington). What was even more intriguing is that two of the players with the most NBA buzz had the least amount of minutes -- Iowa State's Craig Brackins (11 minutes, 1-for-3 shooting, five fouls, two points, two turnovers) and Mississippi State shot blocker Jarvis Varnado (nine minutes, 0-for-2, two rebounds, two fouls, one turnover, one block and one steal). The U.S. shot only 5-for-19 on 3s in the 98-82 loss.

sounds like the refs were out to get him.. 11 mins 5 fouls.. dang..

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

5 fouls in 11 minutes is crazy. He wasn't called on much to play really tight D last year. Wonder if Ryan expects tight D from him and he's having a little difficulty adjusting? Is the game different in a way that puts him at a disadvantage?

Or it could just have been a couple bad calls or just a bad match-up.

If nothing else, hopefully a sign that he's learning and really trying hard to be a factor on defense.

True but lets hope he doesn't try this hard

or maybe he was put in the game near the end to foul to try and play catch-up since they were losing.

Guys....USA Basketball has much more detail than a few sentences from andy katz.

They were playing Serbia AT Serbia and if you read between the (polite) quotes, the officiating was a bit biased (check out the free throw totals in the box score). The USA basketball site has quotes, recaps, box scores, and a zillion photos.

The more concerning news today from the WUG is that Brackins took an elbow to the eye and was injured and didn't play the rest of the game! I hope he's ok.

You're reading too much into the FT attempts. USA had 31 fouls, Serbia had 28 fouls. That sounds pretty even to me, especially when you consider USA probably fouled down the stretch to force FTs. With the FT margin, you had Serbia attempt 46 and the USA attempting 32. You also had the USA shoot only 65% from the line while Serbia shot 84%. It doesn't sound to me like there was necessarily bias. It just sounded like Serbia was more physical down-low. If you look at the USA team, the post players are not big, physical guys, and it doesn't surprise me they got pushed around....

I wouldn't worry though. This is just an exhibition before the real competition starts. There's plenty of time for the USA to improve.

At the Cyclone Club golf outing yesterday McD said Brackins may have broke his nose. They didn't know for sure yet, at that time.

Rip Hamilton seems to do alright with the mask, plus you look like a Mexican wrestler.

Yes, 1 out of the hundreds that have worn a mask chose to keep wearing it post-necessity.
