    New GPS

I just picked up a new GPS today and I'm amazed how much they have changed in just a few years. I was previously using a dinosaur (Garmin C320) which did fine but it was so big and the maps were out of date.

This new one is about a 1/3 the size, longer batter life, maps for both US and Europe, bluetooth, ecoroute, POI's with pictures, free traffic updates, pedestrian mode and city explorer.

With city explorer you can buy maps for specific cities and it will tell you what forms of transportation you can take from place to place.

The Ecoroute thing does a few things. It provides a spreadsheet that allows you to track mileage, fuel used, mpg, etc. It can also try to set you on routes that are most economical. I doubt if I'll use it much.

I doubt I'll use the bluetooth portion and the traffic updates can only be used in bigger cities. I would have actually bought one with less features but the units with both Europe and US are usually loaded.

Now for the bad news. I tried downloading want of the city maps and it stuck at 50% so I thougt I would call garmin. I get on the phone and it immediately says "There is a 1/2 hour wait". I laid down the phone and waited 35 minutes to talk to someone who then transfered me to a "technician". I then heard that I would have to wait another 30 minutes so I hung up. And to think that I was complaining about Apple last week :)

Are you talking about the GPS or the Apple store? The Apple store doesn't have lines. No, I don;t feel too important to wait on the phone for an hour, even though I think it's ridiculous, I just didn't have the time so I will call them back next week. Geez

    Re: New GPS

On a related topic, does anyone use the GPS built into their cell phone with a 3rd party application? I'm thinking about getting a windows mobile phone and it appears that there are a lot of free apps that are supposed to be able to use the GPS in the phone.

I have a simple Tom Tom One and it works great for me. I'm no frills.

Garmin 1370T. They just came out this week. The 1370T includes Europe but the 1350 and 1390 are similar without the extra maps. I got it from Garmin GPS, Maps, & Accessories which is out of Nebraska and they ship fast.

If you don't need all the features a lot of the older ones are being discounted heavily.

What sucks about Garmin is that they put some nice things in each model but also leave some things out of each model. I would have liked to have a window mount that is powered and also the ability to plan trips(route planning), which it doesn't do with this model.

My old one didn't even say the street names and had some OLD maps.

I was just being general. It just seemed that if you had to wait for anything that you would get upset about it. That's where my assumption came from. This thread just seemed like more of the same to me.

Sounds like I'm wrong, but that's the vibe it gave off.

The Sprint Navigation that comes with their Simply everything plans works great (and it's "free").

I had TomTom for my Treo, and that works pretty awesome too.

The Sprint Navigator software downloads maps OTA, so you sort of have to have service, which is a bit of a drawback.

But you have to update the TomTom maps on occasion too, so that's a bit of a drawback as well.

Either way, paired with a car charger, it's a great alternative to a dedicated unit. It comes in VERY handy if you travel a lot.
