    Question about Head Coach/Defensive Coord.

I am not familiar at all with how things work internally on a college football team. The last 2 hires have been Defensive Coord. at their respectable schools, and seemed to be very successful.

My question is....when they become an HC, how involved are they, in this instance with Rhoads, with the defense to be as successful as he was at Pitt? Expecially with brining in a def coord that probably has his own philosophy?

If he's not AS involved, or will be more hands on on the defense, then the thoughts, or saying that we'll have a great defense eventually means absolutley nothing? True? False?

    Any inside would be great!

Re: Question about Head Coach/Defensive Coord.

It varies, but many coaches take a manger (dare I say CEO) approach. PR has stated he will be hands off with play calling, etc.
This does not regulate the thoughts of eventually having a great defense to nothing, because when your leadership's expertise is good defense, it is likely he will provide the program with what it needs for a good defense. Case in point, he signed an experienced DC that was just as well regarded as PR did. That said, ISU still needs some roster help.

Re: Question about Head Coach/Defensive Coord.

I believe Mike Leach and Mike Gundy are (basically?) their schools O-Cordinatiors.

Pete Carrol runs the D @ USC... my guess is that it is up to the head coach to decide. Sometimes it starts after the firing of the coordinator because of lack of success for the HC to take the reins

how did we get wally here? was there any sort of connection he had with the midwest/iowa? I just can't seem to remember out of all those dc threads if there was something about wally.

He wanted to work with CPR.
He wanted to work with his son.
He was previously working at what has been said to be an unpleasant environment.
    Time for a change.
He likes ISU and the conference.

Wally coached with McCarney at South Florida. He was looking to get out of there because Jim Leavitt is very very hard to work for. The rumor is that Leavitt was angry about how recruiting went one year and told all of his assistants to forget about any vacation time whatsoever for the next year. Also, it has been documented that Shane Burnham was looking to get on the staff with his dad at South Florida and Leavitt wouldn't even give him an interview. I bet this did not make Wally very happy. I'm sure McCarney served as the middle man between Rhoads and Wally to get him to Ames.

hursts is correct. Leavitt is a difficult man to work for and Wally was ready to move on down the road. It was a great move by Rhoads to snag him for the Clones.

Someone as experienced as Wally, will have full reign during the game. No doubt though Rhoads will be hands on in practice with the D.

Re: Question about Head Coach/Defensive Coord.

coach mccarney greased the skids for coach paul rhoads to hire wally burnham.i think he will be a very gooddefensive coordinator. i would look for wally to retire in 2-3 years and i would think they would train chris ash to take over at the defensive coordinator position.that is what .i see in the crystal ball

Last 3 hires were defensive coordinators actually.

Re: Question about Head Coach/Defensive Coord.

Paul Rhoads is way more involved than Chizik was. Chizik drove around in a little red cart during practice and rarely said much. Rhoads won't shut up, to be honest.

Chizik gave Bolt (and MacFarland) gameday autonomy. We won't know until this fall what Rhoads will do, but I'm guessing he'll give them autonomy as well.
