    Dan McCarney?????

I am curious on the feelings now that we are on the second coach since he left. Did Pollard make a good move sending him down the road? If you feel it was a good move now, will you still feel the same way if the new coach does not have any success?

In all honesty I am one of those Hawkeye fans that only want Iowa State to lose one game. After that I hope they run the table. I had alot of respect for Dan McCarney. I felt when Pollard fired him that it was not a good move. He had the football program at a very respectable level.

    Re: Dan McCarney?????

Definitely a good move. McCarney may have had us at a respectable level, but I think it is pretty certain that after 12 years he had gotten us as far as he could.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm very grateful to Dan for what he did here, but I'd rather try to win a conference championship and fail than accept 7 win seasons as being the best we can do.

Just because Gene turned out to be a horrid game manager and prematurely bolted does not make Dan a better Big 12 head coach.

It was a good move. McCarney's mistakes had not only caught up with him, but snowballed.

    Re: Dan McCarney?????

I liked Dan and think he is a great Cyclone, but it was time for a change. He had hit a wall where his conservatism was hurting him. 12 years is a long time. Chizik at the time, was the right move. He said all the right things and had promise.

CPR is basically DMac 2.0. I think they are both very similar in style and coaching. CPR knows that he will win at ISU, he's been apart of it and knows what it takes. IMO, its not a matter of if CPR wins, but when.

My Signature says all you need to know about DMac.

    Re: Dan McCarney?????

It needed to be done. Dan had 2 shining opportunities to win the North fall right in his lap, and he ****** them away in the exact same fashion. He never learned from his mistakes. The same mistakes that cost him the North in 2004 cost him the North in 2005. These same mistakes had cost him potential big wins against Wyoming, K-State (1999), etc.

As others have said, I am forever grateful for what he did here, but it was time to move on. All of Pollard's firings have been the right move in my eyes. The hirings have been worse than any reasonable person could expect. It's like getting rid of a Mazda, buying a Lexus, and then it turns out to be a lemon. I find Hawk fans' universal hatered/disapproval of Pollard to be a sign that he is doing his job well.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.

    Re: Dan McCarney?????

It was the right move. Mac only had 3 wins in his last year as well. With seriously lagging ticket sales and other things, a lot of fans started becoming complaisant and not even caring anymore. No way we have the stadium additions or the basketball facility without the move.

Now, Dan might have turned it around AGAIN, but for how long a year or two? Then another 4 win or so season. he didnt have the asst coaches in place to get it done and he wouldnt fire them to make it happen.

    Re: Dan McCarney?????

It was what had to be done. I do believe that the farther we get away from the Dan McCarney era, the more we will realize what he did for our program. I look at him similar to what Johnny Orr is to our basketball program. He didn't coach the team during the really good years but he set up the program to allow the later coaches to succeed.
