    Big Brother is Watching...the Amish?

Lancaster, Pa., keeps a close eye on itself - Los Angeles Times

Ok, it was a catchy title, but this is pretty scary to me.

If I had a dollar for every time I thought the Amish were up to no good......

Freak'n Amish... I know they're up to no good every time I pass 'em on the highway :police:

Why, I still remember driving past a market one Saturday and saw two teenage boys out by themselves with the buggy, laughing and having a good time. Probably stole the horse out of daddy's barns while he was raising a barn

Seriously though... I was rather amused to see 2 teenage boys out with the buggy. Probably the equviliant of getting to borrow the car for the day... kinda neat way of seeing the similarities rather than the differences in culture

Isn't this the same area that had the Amish schoolhouse killings back in 2006?

I saw an amish buggy parked in a parking spot at Hy-Vee in Southern Iowa.

Re: Big Brother is Watching...the Amish?

Growing up, my hometown (McIntire) was home to the largest colony of Amish in the State (outside of Kalona that is). Somehow, it was never turned into a tourist industry, and most people were stunned to find out that Amish lived there. We easily had the equivalent of "ghetto" Amish. When they moved into a building site, they just ran it into the ground, and rather than keeping nice, tidy, building sites, they looked like a storm hit.

I have always thought of Southern Iowa as amish country, not Northern. That's kinda surprisng.

I always think of something else when it comes to the "horse being out of the barn"....

Maybe I shouldn't have made a funny title. Doesn't anyone find it disturbing that there are cameras everywhere in Lancaster?

There are plenty of cameras in Chicago or Des Moines too.

Diff is what they do with them. I only glazed over the article, but it doesn't sound overly devious. I think the real issue comes when they can arrest or fine you for stuff they remotely watch you doing.

IMO - what's the difference between this and if they hired x1000 more officers to sit and watch every corner?

The only reason I say that I have a problem with fines or ticketing is that I think you have a right to state your case for what you may have done.

I read the title backwards and thought that the Amish were watching Big Brother on CBS, then wondered how that was possible without electricity.

It was an isolated colony. Actually, Harmony, Minnesota (which is pretty much 45-50 miles to the east) has a huge Amish colony. In recent years, many of the Amish in my area have moved to Diagonal, near Mt. Ayr.
