    $4,500 Cash For Clunkers

Have you heard if and when this will be finalized? Is there any chance that it will include certain used vehicles too? IMO, it is going to be pretty tough to get someone with an old beater (like me) to move all the way up to a new $20 - $30K vehicle even with the incentive!

Cash for Clunkers FAQ | Bill Questions and Answers

I don't see a lot of people using it.

If your car is worth more than $4,500 it's worthless.

You have to buy a new car.

You have had to own the car already.

You don't get trade in value plus the credit.

If your new car purchase gets 4 mpg more than your trade you get $3,500. If the new car gets 10 mpg better than your trade you get $4,500.

This program does not apply to you because you will be better off trading the car in through traditional channels. All cars that are part of the Cash for Clunkers bill we be sent to the scrapyard.

    Re: $4,500 Cash For Clunkers

the clunkers must be turned into a scrapyard. dealers do not get a chance to re-sell them...from what i have heard anyways.

this is a great deal for someone who drives an absolute pos down the road and can afford a new vehicle. don't really know too many ppl this will help that much.

It'll help more of the people that can get one for about $500 on private sale, probably.

Also, does new mean 2009 or later? thanks-

You must own the car 12 months before sale. This will eliminate the quickie deal.

Money is expected to run out by Sep (only $1B allotted).

If you had stored a klunker in a barn for future renovating, you may be the One to use this program.

You can get the money up front.

Older brand new cars such as 08s should qualify also if never owned/driven.

at $4500 per car... that is 222,222 new cars sold. WOW. I will be surprised if that mark IS it.

I have an old clunker, but I would have to get a hybrid to get more MPGs out of a new car (currently getting 35mpg). It's not fair I say!

    Re: $4,500 Cash For Clunkers

Would be pretty cool if you could pair this up with a push/pull/drag event (the kind of sale where the dealer will offer you $3000 minimum for any trade you bring in)

Political Statement voluntarily removed - Flag Guy

Nice idea, but kinda skeptical as to how much of an impact it'll have on anything other than car sales

I'm sure there is a demographic that it will help purchase a new car (aka this is not supposed to be a "for profit" endevour), but I'm sure there will be those that find a way to profit from it

I think car sales was specifically the purpose. As far as what bill it was in...yeah, that's par for the course...

    Re: $4,500 Cash For Clunkers

In reality, they should allow anyone to go out and buy an old clunker and use it for the $4,500 credit. Then you would actually be removing clunkers from the road. Most of the people I know that drive cars worth less than $4,500 either don't have the money to buy a new car or are frugal and would never think about buying a new car.

I also think this would help the import more than the domestics since a larger % of their cars are fuel efficient.

Well, obviously, but that is how expenditures such as this that have no chance of passing on their own get passed...
