    Cyclones Offensive Strategy Next Year????

Now that Barney Cotton is out and Gene Chizik and his staff are now in, what kind of offense do you think will be implimented with the weapons we still have.?? One thing is for sure we need to continue to feed our all-american canidate the ball!!!! Todd Blythe needs at least 10 touches each game!! Please does anyone know what we plan on doing next year??

Chizik has mentioned some empty sets, five receiver type formations, and single back sets. Spreading the field out will be a priority!

He also mentioned the strong running game was key to giving the QB time to throw. I think it will be a spread, balanced attack.

Depends on how the O-line develops this Spring and next Fall.

If they can't sustain blocks, Meyer may be forced to do a lot of 3-step drops in order to get rid of the ball before he lands on his ***.

3-Step drops are OK in a spread offense though. I would imagine that regardless of the OL blocking ability, we will be running quite a bit of 3 and 5 step drops.

I like the idea of a quick-hitting spread offense. It can be a great counter to the blitzes that ate us alive all of last year. If teams come out bringing the kitchen sink, and Meyer can hit guys on quick routes, thats going to call off the dogs quite a bit, and allows to run more, as well as opening more deep routes to Blythe, etc. Last year we ran too many slow developing plays, and with our atrocious line play, we had no chance to get them off.

And I think that's what we'll see. Hopefully lots of quick-hitting in the running game and far less zone reads, etc. If anyone took note of how we ran the ball on Mizzu last year - that's what I'm hoping to see.

I do think the talks of 4/5 wide sets is getting a bit blown up. If I were a new coach, I'd talk about how we're going to do everything, etc. It's one advantages a brand new guy has - the other teams not being able to prepare for ya all that well.

We need to spread it out to be successful, as many have noted. But we won't be going Texas Tech on anybody.

Talked with a starter personally and he said he hopes fans are ready to see Bret Meyer throw the ball because we are gonna be 5 wide more than 3/4 of the time. That is a bold statement but it came straight out of a starters mouth. I think it's a great idea.

I think that brand of football will be exciting to watch - if nothing else. Hell, we have the position players on offense to get it done.

Re: Cyclones Offensive Strategy Next Year????

I just want to see some sort of imagination. ISU doesn't have the manpower to line up and go toe to toe with the big boys. I think that was the main problem with DM and BC. They tried to be something that we weren't and didn't play to the strengths of the offense.

Well if thats the way that things are gonna go down, then heck I cant wait for the season to start.. That is exactly what i wanted to hear, ISU spreading it out and making things happen... Thats exactly what i love to run, and im glad Gene is open minded and is up to do just about everything to give us a chance to win!!

I dont see what the problem was with draw left, counter right, sack, punt. We were pretty consistent with that scheme.

I must remind you, punt was our best offensive play in a couple games last season...

Heck, our offense was good for 310 yards a game. Why mess with Mother nature.
