    HP dvd/cd writer

Last night I bought an HP DVD1170E external writer and when I connected it my computer recognized it and I can read a cd just fine. But it says I have to install the software that came with it to be able to burn cd's and dvd's which is why I have it. But, the software will not install. It is called Nero8. There is a review online that says stay away from Nero8 but that is the only disk that came with it. Plus, HP says to use whatever came with it and they have no drivers I can download.
What I am wondering is, is there anyone here that has this drive and might be able to give me some tips.
    thanks.

    Go download AnyDVD and CloneDVD.

Then try and do a DVD copy using the new drive. The software does the read/write for you.

Both are trial versions but it should help you determine if the burner is working.

I use Nero all the time although it's an older version. Why wouldn't it install? One free alternative you could try is imgburn. The Official ImgBurn Website

I was a victim of a series of accidents, as are we all.

    Re: HP dvd/cd writer

Thanks, both of you. I'll try the IMGBurn if I can't get Nero to install. I don't think the drive itself is an issue at all. Nero has a diskclean tool that they recommend using if you have installation problems so I will try that when I get home. All I want to use my drive for is to copy .jpg files from my hard drive, no movies or anything like that.

I'd recommend IMGBurn. It's small and works great. Never had any problems with it.

I've heard Nero 8 sucks. I have Nero 6, which is okay, but not stellar. Check out their website to see if there are any updates to it, that might help.

Why isn't it installing? What message(s) are you getting?

All of the errors look like this:

Faulting application setupx_nero.exe, version 1.10.6.0, faulting module nview.dll, version 6.13.10.3190, fault address 0x00009ddf.

faulting module nview.dll is in all of them so I am guessing that is the problem. I'm looking online for help with this but if anyone here can help me that would be great.

    Re: HP dvd/cd writer

My problem is solved. I googled the error message and found out I probably needed to update the drivers for my video card. I updated all my drivers and now everything seems to be working fine. It turns out it was only happening when I tried to install something and I hadn't installed anything for quite a while so I may have had this problem and didn't know it.

thanks for the input from you guys!! I was kind of in panic mode because my hard drive was too full and with the Indy Cars in Newton this weekend I was going to need a lot of space for photos.
