    Ump call pitches

Anybody else see this? May 25, 2009 Sports Illustrated article about Randy Johnson. Seattle catcher Dave Valle admits he let the home plate ump call his pitches for a game Johnson pitched back in '93. Wouldn't name him of course. This is just wrong. I wonder how else umpires get their giggles playing with the outcomes of games?

    Re: Ump call pitches

I don't know about playing with the outcomes of games, but I used to umpire for a small community's little league, and I got to know most of kids pretty well, and it was always fun talking back and forth with them and the catcher about how much they would pay me to walk them (obviously knowing I was kidding) and how I would tell the catcher to call a curve to see if whoever was batting could hit it.
Granted two totally different levels, but sometimes its fun to converse with catchers and batters. Just my two cents.

Someone should call this question into the Umps Eye View with Tim and Eric this off season on KXNO. I have always enjoyed those programs.

Maybe the ump was trying to see how much he could punk Dave Valle....
