Um, no on Boise State for sure, but Utah slobber knocked a team that had been a NC contender 95% of the football season. I can buy Utah.

Notre Dame or FSU would have had 93. Both were the best that year. Notre Dame would still have had 89. WV and ND were the teams to beat that year, they played, ND won. It is an interesting subject though!

I hope the Boise State championship is a joke.. that was one of the most entertaining games I've watched in my life. But let's be real, OU wins that game 4 out of 5 times, and OU wasn't the best team in the nation that year.

Utah couldn't have played with OU and Florida from last year and Boise St....well not a chance in hell

Those teams can't win 3 straight weeks against the top talent in the country. Give them a month to prepare and they have a shot b/c they have smart player and coaches. A week? Not a chance

Utah and Boise were nice stories, but in the playoffs they would have to win multiple games. I dont think they would beat that they would beat those types of teams 2 or three times in a row.

Yeah, Bama had a LOT to play for that day.

This seriously is the worst excuse in the world.

I'm sure that 2003 USC and 2004 Auburn had nothing to play for, being that they were "screwed" out of their chance to play for the national championship. Did they fold? Hell no - they went out and played the game and won to prove a point.

I think it's completely BS to diminish Utah's accomplishments by saying their performance in the Sugar Bowl is meaningless because Alabama had "nothing to play for." And I do think that Utah would have given both Florida and Oklahoma a game. Would they have beaten either team? I don't know, but we'll never know now.

Re: if there had always been a playoffs in FBS...

Bama losing to Utah had nothing to do with desire. They didn't have Andre Smith anchoring the offensive line. Their line was pretty weak outside of him and it showed in that game. John Parker Wilson was running for his life all night and they couldn't run the ball the same way they did all year.

    Apples and Oranges.

Bama lost last year and with that they lost any chance at a National Championship. Bama and USC still had an undefeated season going on and a chance to split some votes for #1 in the country. Not really a good comparison

Re: if there had always been a playoffs in FBS...

The Utah complaint for last year holds no water for me. Yes, they beat a good Alabama. Alabama was #1 for a lot of the season. But this is where I thought the polls were off track - Alabama got to #1 after on a meteoric rise after beating Georgia. Georgia was good, but not great last year and that elevated Alabama as well. My 2 cents, anyway...
