    Anyone from Oelwein?

I saw that there is a new book coming out based on the meth problems there. I'm wondering how the book will be received there.

If it was, all of the rides would go very "high".

Newton, if I am not mistaken, was up there at one time...wonder what the current state-wide meth rankings are.

    Re: Anyone from Oelwein?

I've heard that the meth problem in this state is a fraction of what it was 4 years ago. My hometown of McIntire, near Osage, was really bad a few years back, but the thing with meth is that it's just so incredibly destructive that the people who get into it are basically dead or practically vegetables after a few years. Meth is still a problem, but just nowhere near what it was in the recent past.

I think you are a bit confused...

the making of meth in Iowa is a fraction of what it was 4 years ago. The use of meth is as bad now (probably worse) as it was 4 years ago.

Now the **** is coming up from Mexico, in droves! And it is bad... really, really bad.

You could make a case (as poor as it is) that the Iowa meth was 'better' (meaning not AS bad) for the meth heads than the **** from Mexico. Get my drift?

Yeah. That's what I meant. A lot of the really horrible things associated with meth came with cooking it, though. Houses starting on fire, mobile meth labs blowing up, etc. I am, however pretty sure that actual use is down where I'm from, for the reasons I've mentioned. I don't live around there anymore, but when I go back, it just doesn't seem as bad in those regards as it was a couple of years ago.

    Re: Anyone from Oelwein?

Yup, I will admit, only temporarily, that I am from Oelwein. Haven't lived there in 10+ years but I am from there. Might check out the book, but I don't remember it being as bad as the blurb makes it out to be. I do however remember the guy burning his face off. Bro was on the fire dept. there and filled me in on that one.

    Re: Anyone from Oelwein?

I'm from NE Iowa. I actually know a lot of the main characters in the book, including the crank dealer (her kid went to school with me).

I haven't heard how it'll be received, but I do know the guy is having a book signing at the local library.

That being said, I read the first chapter online, and it paints a picture of Oelwein that's a lot rougher than is really true.

That's because he's trying to make money; not trying to make Oelwein a better place
