Chops Owners Want to Sell/Move Franchise

And replace it with one from the CHL...

Iowa Chops owners want to sell franchise, have it moved from D.M. | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

If I were the Polk County Supervisors I would sink my teeth in to them and refuse to let them move the franchise. The only option Schlegel has given is to sell the Chops off then move in a CHL team (next lower level) and give only 50% of that ownership to a local group.

Fool us once, shame on you. Fool us twice, shame on us. I hope to God the Polk County Supervisors don't let Schlegel pull this crap on us again.

A CHL team should never play in Wells Fargo. It was even a stretch having an AHL team play there in this market. In reality, they should have been in a 6-7k arena like most AHL teams in smaller markets.

Chops Owners Want to Sell, Move Team

Iowa Chops owners want to sell franchise, have it moved from D.M. | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

The owners of the Iowa Chops want to sell the American Hockey League franchise and have it moved from Des Moines, Polk County officials confirmed today.

Angela Connolly, chairman of the county board, said members of the Chops ownership group, D.M. Hockey Holdings LLC, informed four of the five members of the county board that they would replace the AHL franchise here with a franchise in the Central Hockey League, another minor league, and would offer 50 percent of the ownership of that franchise to local investors.
The Schlegels sound like either idiots are snakes, possibly both. I hope Polk County nails them to the wall for breaking their lease.

Re: Chops Owners Want to Sell/Move Franchise

I supported these guys. This is a big kick in the nuts.

I held out hope that they would get something worked out with Carolina or the Oilers, and I was given reassurances from the organization that this would work out well with AHL hockey remaining in Des Moines.

    I feel deceived.

    This is a damned shame.

Likewise. It is pretty clear they have no idea how to run a hockey franchise in a smaller market.

Nitzel did everything he could this year as the team president then the Schlegels pulled the rug out from under him and everyone else.

I just don't think AHL hockey can survive in this market. However I think the city should drill Schlegel for killing the lease. Just nail that guy to the wall and make sure he never does business like that in Des Moines again.

Wow, I didn't realize how many teams are in the AHL. I hope they can keep the Chops.

The problem is there's an AHL hockey-caliber arena that needs filled with something. If putting 6k in WFA for AHL hockey was bad, putting 2k in WFA for BFEHL hockey will be much worse. They might as well put the Bucs in there.

But it won't have nearly enough mustaches, spilled beer, and 5ft. tall bathroom ceilings.

Re: Chops Owners Want to Sell/Move Franchise

Note to the DM Register, the CHL is NOT the level below the AHL. I'm not sure what to call the CHL. It is a league of either old guys that dont want to give up hockey or club hockey guys that tried out and got a spot on the team.

I can't imagine this is a product that would sell in DM.

Are the 'Chops' owners crazy ? Who is going to buy an unaffiliated AHL team that is deeply in debt (I think this would be a safe assumption given they took out a huge loan on the franchise and couldn't make their yearly payment to the parent club).

You idiots on the Polk County Border of supervisiors who think they have this great contract that stipulates 'Pro hockey'... Go call your legal counsel and ask them what you get if Schliegel Sports files for bankruptcy and the contract gets ripped up in bankruptcy court.

No matter what happens, hockey outside of the Bucs are screwed. The average person doesn't follow this crap, and now we're dealing with 3 years of crap changes... Are we sure McDermott isn't working for the Schlegels! ZING!

In reality this sucks. WFA is just too damn big to house sporting events in Iowa. The Barnstormers get good crowds, but they still have to curtain off seats...

That's what ticks me off about this. We built this big beautiful arena that's about twice the size needed for most events. WFA arena rarely even comes within 5k seats of capacity. Has WFA ever been filled near capacity? Maybe for that cheap motivational seminar they held there a couple year ago?

I think a couple concerts sold out...Not going to name the one I'm pretty sure sold out just so I don't get flamed for it.

Re: Chops Owners Want to Sell/Move Franchise

Polk county has a contract with them for the lease on WFA which I believe they still have 7 more years on. Pretty sure even if they sell and move they will owe some big time damages to Polk county. I still don't understand why they ever signed down for 10 years because before the first puck ever hit the ice we knew it was not going to last in this market.
