Re: Most popular Liquor in Iowa

All of those hard liquors are crap, but that's the way it goes.

Some of us that drink that quality ****, aren't buying tons of bottles at once. We're taking quality over quantity.

The college kids stocking up on cheap booze are going to outnumber the rest of us as they're taking quantity over quality...

It was the most expensive shot in the place though, so it must have been good

As for usual vodka... I can't believe no one has mentioned Smirnoff yet. Then again I probably fall in the odd category... I won't usually splurge for Absolute or higher quality, but I refuse to go as low as 5 o'clock or dare I say it, Hawkeye Vodka

Though I also used to buy the 100 proof so maybe that was part of it (not so much any more)

Vodka - as a vodka martini drinker, my favorite is Ketel One. Grey Goose is good too. Absolute is a product of marketing. It is not very good and waaaayyyy over priced. Ask any martini drinker. As others have said, there is little reason to pay much for vodka that you are mixing. I usually buy the cheapest one on sale. I'm not afraid of Hawkeye. I thought Iowa was knicknamed the Hawkeye state? Don't give the EIU fans the pleasure of thinking the name means anything more.

I know many people who drink BV. Those are Dad and most of his friends who all have it on hand. So I've always thought of it as an "old people" liquor. Kind of like the "Butter Brickle" ice cream of liquors.

That would be the one arguable difference, imo.

The only time I had Grey Goose, I had stolen a bottle at the 2006 KSU game in Manhattan. There was a group of ISU "fans" (and I use the term loosely) partying next to us. We had ran into these guys on the edge of Manhattan, and like us had been partying in Ames the night before, so we assumed they were cool. Then, while we were tailgating we found out these guys had no intention of going to the game, never went to ISU games in Ames, and were just a bunch of spoiled trust-fund coke (not the cola) head touche bags. They passed out after about 3 hrs, and left a bottle of Grey Goose just laying around, so I ganked it.

Re: Most popular Liquor in Iowa

I've seen taste tests on Vodka and here is how they usually go.

In mixed tests people have a hard time picking out a differecne between the most expensive and the cheap stuff.

If you drink the stuff straight up Grey Goose and Absolut usually don't finish very well.

The only time I've ever had Grey Goose I couldn't will myself to swallow it (couldn't stand the taste) and I ended up spitting it out "mist-style" all over the table.

I am so NOT a vodka drinker...

With the others on the list I'm surprised not to see Old Crow.

    (Skaaaa!)

My favorite liquor ever is Patron. I freaking love that stuff, but I really haven't drank it much.

I like whiskey and usually drink the cheaper stuff. Because of that, this is a huge treat. It tastes so smooth to me, I just pour it glass and sip it. Tried it on ice, but didn't like the watered down taste (although many will drink it with a splash of water).
