    Surprise players for 2009?

Since it is summer, I thought I would start another pointless thread in anticipation for the season. Most teams will have a couple players seemingly come out of nowhere to make a significant contribution. Any guesses on whom that will be for ISU in 09? For die-hard ISU fans it may be difficult for a player to come out of nowhere, given they have the 4-deeps memorized.
My guess on offense is either Joel Zitek or Brayden Burris.
Defense I'll say, due to the position, either Kyle Slifka, Taylor Mansfield, or Cameron Murray. Unfortunately, this is how weak I feel we are at DE.

In which casse, I think you're way off. The surprise player there will be someone like Jerrod Black, Austin Alburtis or Bailey Johnson; someone who is a true "surprise" only to the casual fan.

Edit: Guess I need coffee--I thought that said "DL". Will be back on that thought as soon as I suck down some caffeine.

How would Collin be a surprise to anyone? The latter half of the season, he was awesome!

Offense: Money Reynolds (a surprise only to non-CF'ers)
    Defense: David Sims (see above)

I'd also toss in Kurt Hammerschmidt, who would be higher except for franklin and Catlett ahead of him, and hope that many players like Burris, Haughton, Sed Johnson, Maggitt, Lattimer and Tuafoou, and frosh like Aaron Moore are also "surprises.

I'd also hope that some of the defensive seniors, like Chris Lyle, Allen Bell and Fred Garrin also provide a goodly package of "surprise"...

Collin Franklin would most definitely be a surprise. I think anyone that has seen him can tell that he has potential to be great BUT he did have only 15 catches last year. You would think his stats will at least double this year

I think Reynolds is an interesting pick because I think it's going to be tough for a WR to be a surprise just because the snaps aren't going to be there. Do you think he'll have a big impact on special teams?

    Offense: Spears
    Defense: Black

Why don't you think the snaps will be there?

Sure, the catches will be spread around, but Herman's receivers at Rice still caught a lot of balls.

And I expect Money to make the biggest impact with touchdowns, in any case, especially if he grabs both return jobs. And plays in the WildClone as well.

I supposed that I could hope for two returns for TD's out of Money on returns. Kick and punt returns each.

    Why set your standards low?

But who knows, someone like Jeremy Reeves may jump up and grab a return job.

I like the WildClone idea. Nicely-named

    Re: Surprise players for 2009?

Bellamy on offense and I just have this feeling from watching Princeton Jackson play some high school ball that he's going to be contending for PT even with returners and two JUCOS. This kid is Alvin Bowenesque and will be a force before all is said and done... mark my words.

Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?

    Re: Surprise players for 2009?

I think Reynolds will be a good player, but am not foaming at the mouth like some people, haha. I am more excited to see Josh Bellamy to be honest. He at least has experience at WR. I think Reynolds will definitely provide a player with versatility but I see him more as a special teams impact than anything else. It will be tough to find playing time at WR. Because of that fact I would have to say the surprise player is most likely going to be on defense. New players have a much better chance to find an impact on defense than they do on offense right now. A lot more holes to fill.

Maggitt on D. He was a beast in the Spring game.

    Re: Surprise players for 2009?

We need the surprise player to be a DE, DT or LB. That would be the biggest help we could find right now. If someone can step in like Maggitt and Laing or another feller and make a much needed impact alongside Parker and Lyle, we will be in business.

You will be surprised to know that in this head to head match up Money threw for 210yards, rushed for 20 yards, and (drum roll please) in the 2nd half went to WR where he caught 4 passes for 97 yards including 2 TDs! One TD came late in the fourth quarter with his team down 4, he caught a quick screen on the right side @ the 26 and cut it all the way back across the field to the left sideline and scored...(Sims was @ Safety btw)...if I had Youtube capabilities I would post it!

Now dont get the wrong Idea, I dont want you to think Im posting this to say one player is better than the other, Im simply clarifying the fact that Reynolds has plenty of experience @ WR.

Its a blessing to be talking about such great athletes (Bellamy, Money) knowing that now they are on the same team!!!

One of them is sure to gain a starting role in my opinion. There is a difference between a WR and a pure playmaker...;-)
