Game consoles and Games Off 3rd month in row

The word is recent higher gas prices are eating into sales from loss of disposable income:

    MarketWatch.com Story

According to data from the NPD Group released Thursday afternoon, sales of video-game software in the U.S. slipped to $448.9 million during the month of May -- down 17% from the same period last year. Hardware sales fell 30% to come in at $302.5 million for the month.

Hopefully the game prices will drop as a result. I have a hard time dropping $60 on a new game. Actually the only games I'll pay full price for anymore would be ones that have a lot of online play and you want to get in on the action right away. Single player games I usually wait a year or so until they are $30.

I blame it on the lame games that have been coming out lately.

I blame it on higher priorities in my life. I buy used and deeply discounted. No way I buy retail at 60.

Movie DVDs and music CDs may be going the same route.

To make things worse, many developers are now charging an additional $4 to $10 for downloadable content that, in some cases, is already on game discs in the first place and all you download is a key to unlock it, thus making $60 games nearly $70.

The only good news on that is that for the most part it's not a mandatory download. See example case of Horse Armor for Oblivion - now that started some crap. BUT you really didn't need it at all.

Now if it's a multilayer map I understand why you'd want it more, but once again your rarely need to buy it unless you want it.

Yes, exactly. I think this will all go away when games are released in a fully downloadable format. There is no way they will be able to charge 60 per pop in DLC. They will have no shipping and manufacturing cost.

It's actually the perfect reason to keep the price there. 1. it's what we are accustom to (see gas prices. Yeah 2.70 sucks, but compared to the 4.05 we had it doesn't seem bad)
    2. it will just give them more profit so they'll definitely keep their price point.

Not sure about that. I would like to see a break down of cost associated with development and production. If they dropped the price, they would sell more I think, there for upping their profit anyway.

No kidding. Or they could pull what valve did. Promise dlc, and the only dlc they offer adds a cheap survival mode, and makes 2 of the existing campaigns have versus mode (somethiing that should have been there at launch). The DLC that was promised, new maps, etc, ended up being wrapped up into what will now be Left 4 Dead 2.
