    Re: Principal refuses tarp money

Pretty funny how everyone freaked out and starting slamming the company when in the end they decided not to take the money...

I'd rather see them lay people off than take tarp money and I have two hands in the game.

Probably will be forced to take it after refusing

Exactly, has anyone/anything not been forced to take it?

Don't confuse hope for a plan.

Considering Paulson only forced 9 of the hundreds that have taken it, I'd say a majority were not forced...

I meant out of those who initially refused it.

Most of the lay offs were products of people's environments. There were people who's work has seriously stopped. In other cases it was lining their expenses with revenues.

I think what was being seen was taking on disproportionally more expenses as the company grew.

I probably didn't say the right thing here. I've known a few really good people that worked hard for the company lose their job in the last few months. In the beginning I thought they were just letting go of the non productive people but now they are losing some good employees that have a lot of time with the company. It's a tough economy but they are probably doing what's right for the company.

People forget that at the end of the day, PFG is a business ad has to make the same tough decisions that every company does. They hire when there is a business need (nobody complained for the last 20 years of adding jobs) and reduce staff when the work contracts. They have done more for Des Moines than all other businesses combined.

PFG is in business to make money, not create jobs. Times are tough. Get over it.

I agree with some of what you say...but don't like the implication that it wasn't until recent that good people were let go. I know some of the people who were let go in the first round of 500 and they were very good workers, very smart people. Some fat was trimmed, yes, but it's unfair to think that anyone who was let go at any point in any of these job termination rounds was let go because he/she wasn't a good/hard/valuable/smart worker.

You're correct. It just hit home with this last round of cuts because I knew some of the people personally and had worked with them for the last 10 years. I think it's just a case of being in the wrong department at the wrong time.

Agreed. At this point it seems like there is no rhyme or reason any longer to who goes away.
