Polk officials say mysterious shell killed Urbandale man | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

Now it sounds as though something other than a bean bag round ended up in one of the deputies shotgun. This is a really terrible story.

Re: Polk County deputies shoot bean bags, kill suicidal man

Watching the news at 6, a spokesman from the sheriffs office held up one of the bean bag slugs next to the type of slug that killed the man; they were remarkably similar.

Wow. That story, from the register reporting anyway, makes it seem that the cops were reckless and/or careless to the point of manslaughter.

City of Des Moines, open check book. Cops of Des Moines, do not pass go, go directly to the spin room.

It is possible that the round in question somehow got mixed into the rest of the non-lethal rounds, especially considering that those weapons are unloaded/reloaded at the beginning and end of each shift.

I think this is Polk County, not the city. I'm sure someone is going to have to pay a settlement to this guy's family, though.

Re: Polk County deputies shoot bean bags, kill suicidal man

    2 things.

    1. I don't want to bag on the police officers. But I'm failing to see from this article what would prompt them to shoot the young man with anything? It would seem he never threatened anyone other than himself. So open up with less than lethal? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

    2. How are these things manufactured? Why would they EVER be in a form that would allow you to confuse them with live ammo?

Number 2 is the big big question. Shouldn't these rounds be fluorescent pink with NON-LETHAL stamped on them in giant black letters.

It may be possible, it may even be what happened, but so what.

They "mysteriously" mixed up the real bullets with the fake ones?

"Sorry. My bad." Doesn't really cut it in this circumstance.

The tragedy and irony of this borders on the surreal.

They were unable to see if he had put down the handgun he had. Yes, he had a gun. It was at night and raining.

This is a sad unfortunate event. No arguing that.

I'm not saying the police mixed them up, they may have come that way from the manufacturer. Nobody knows.

Let's not try to knee-jerk this like everyone here did when the WDM cops capped a rapist in Glen Oaks.

Re: Polk County deputies shoot bean bags, kill suicidal man

I just caught the tail end of a sheriff presser on WHOTV. He was holding two shells. One was the bean-bag which looked to be yellow. The other, which didn't look like any typical shotgun shell but was apparently the lethal one, looked to be kinda clear with something yellow inside.

So it appeared that both were of yellow appearance. That's if I saw what I thought I saw.

If so - how could anyone not see such an accident coming from a mile away?

(If I'm wrong with what I think I saw - please correct me).
