    Drinking permits

Long-time college administrator Dr. Roderic B. Park proposes the issuance of drinking 'learner permits' or licenses for under-age persons as a way to help teach moderate drinking and reduce alcohol abuse.

    Re: Drinking permits

I'm all for it. The USA drinking age is ridiculously stupid. In some states at 14 you can drive and put your life, and everyone else on the road in danger. At 16 you can legally get married. At 18 you can go to war and die for your country. You can do all those things, but you can't legally drink alcohol until you're 21.

    You're right - that's awful.

If you can get married, you should be able to drink.

and drinking can never endanger anyone. I think the issue is that driving doesn't destroy developing brain scales.

IMO, it should be 19. Not 18 as an attempt to limit high school drinkers....but we all know they can get it if they want it now anyway.

Imo, the drinking age is just another example of ridiculous paternalistic laws that we're burdened with in this country. Every well developed nation in the world has a lower drinking age, and the current drinking age is responsible for an alcohol taboo that naturally leads to a higher culture of abuse for those not allowed to partake. In most of Europe people are introduced to alcohol at a younger age and develop a more responsible attitude towards it because it isn't held out as a taboo. Just my 2 cents.

Same thing. Anyone who has ever been around weed knows that it is no worse of a social evil than alcohol or tobacco. I don't enjoy the effects of weed anymore, but honestly it is very hard to say that it is a more dangerous form of intoxication than alcohol. You can't smoke yourself dead (in one sitting).

This. I read an article about a month ago that the legalization and taxation of weed would add $77 billion to the economy yearly.
