    18 seniors, 1 transfer..not easy for Chiz.

Some may not agree with the state of the program left for Gene Chizik, however, he faces some challenges with the players on the roster. There are 18 seniors and 1 transfer open. In addition, two red shirt freshmen are place kickers and 1 red shirt punter. Add Culb. to that and next year, there will be three place kickers on scholarship. There are a total of 30 freshmen on the team, so DMac's last class was huge, the question is, what is the quality. Chizik will have to live with a lot of DMac's guys for several years.

With the national rankings of our last couple of recruiting classes i wouldn't hold your breath on any major talent. I'm sure there will be some pleasant suprises and a diamond or two in the rough but don't expect a Seneca Wallace or a Troy Davis in the mix.

Re: 18 seniors, 1 transfer..not easy for Chiz.

I actually don't think that Culbertson is that bad. Coach Mac could have helped out Culbertson immensely on some of his famous misses. Positioning the ball in the middle of the field would have been the biggest help. If I had a running back who was told to position the ball in the middle of the field for a FG attempt and then proceeded to run the ball to the sideline, he would be benched.

I think that Chizik has added some pretty decent names and talent. I have hope that we may even field a pretty respectable team next year. I'm hoping for a .500 season and really think that could be attainable.

I wouldn't mind having a kicker that can make CLUTCH field goals! Shaggy is great with no pressure but once there is pressure he chokes!

Chiz will have to live with Mac's guys for awhile, hopefully the new staff can develop this past freshman class into something good. With things pretty bare, they are going to have their shots at playing time.

Re: 18 seniors, 1 transfer..not easy for Chiz.

I'm as confident about the offense for next year as we were this past year. Yes, we were wrong last year, but, I think there is good reason for optimism with 4 JC OL on campus and going through strength and conditioning and spring training; Meyer, Blythe, Sumrall, Moses, several capable TE's; Bass and Bell may be much better than Hicks; and a new OC. The new strength and conditioning may help the returners. The defense will be better coached and will have some help. We're not going to challenge for a BCS bowl, but, a bowl is doable.

Re: 18 seniors, 1 transfer..not easy for Chiz.

Chiz doesn't necessarily have to live with all of Mac's guys. Scholarships are renewable on a year by year basis. Even without the somewhat questionable practice of simply not renewing a scholarship, other opportunities could be suggested elsewhere to the players. The player might decide it isn't worth going through the hell that conditioning apparently is under the new coaches if they won't be playing. We've already seen at least one talented player move on... it wouldn't surprise me if a number of less talented players decide they will look elsewhere as well.

3-4 years for Coach.. I am patient.

But it would be nice to have a few glimmers of hope this season and the next two to get us cracked up for 2009 and 10.

See these posts bother me. I have read similar statements from others on this site as well.

This team won four games last year, and certainly didn't look good doing it. We play all of the good South teams again, and we go to Toledo. I don't see where more wins are coming from. I understand coaching can make a difference, but I am not sure that it will make up that big a difference from last year's debacle.

This program was left in LOUSY shape. Yes there are the skill position players back, but NOTHING up front. My hopes are that by the time we hit the next UT OU and TT cycle in the schedule that Gene will have fixed the mess that he inherited.

Re: 18 seniors, 1 transfer..not easy for Chiz.

That's the point of this thread...Mac filled the scholarships up last year with players that may not see the light of day. 30 total. That will hamper Chiz, who would love to have more to give out next year. Two mediocre frosh placekickers on scholarship...how can he give out another one? Plus Culb on a full ride. Chiz has work to do to clean up the mess.
