High school girl wins team track title by herself again

School valedictorian wins team track title alone -- again

    June 6, 2009
    CBSSports.com wire reports

AUSTIN, Texas -- The best small high school track team in Texas is once again a freckle-faced girl named Bonnie Richardson.
Richardson, the valedictorian of her 59-student class in the tiny farming town of Rochelle, -- and the lone girl competing in track and field at the school, won the Class A team state title Saturday for the second consecutive year.
She won the gold in the long jump and high jump, took silver in the discus and bronze in the 200 meters. She also finished fourth in the 100 meters.
There are no other girls on the Rochelle High School track team. Richardson is the only girl in state history to win a team title on her own.

A girl in Iowa did this as well this year. I don't think she is the only one on the team, but she scored all the teams points at State.

I believe that was Sara Stoakes from North Tama Community,Traer. I believe she is going to run track at KState.

Teen wins team state title by herself - again

Bonnie Richardson, from tiny Rochelle, Texas (population 600), has accomplished what no other Texas high school track and field athlete has ever achieved: back-to-back team state championships by herself.

    Pretty impressive feat....

Re: High school girl wins team track title by herself again

I don't know how long ago Minnesota did this, but they started doing a "True Team" track meet. They do it for several other sports as well. But it measures the true depth of your track team. Each person scores a point in an event. So if there are 26 kids in the event, 1st place gets 26 points and 26th place gets 1 point and so on. My high school made it on to the state true team meet my junior and senior years and placed 2nd my senior year. It is actually a lot of fun and gets your whole team involved and cheering on each other.

I would assume that every event has the same number of competitors right? Otherwise it wouldn't be scored fairly.

Re: High school girl wins team track title by herself again

In 2008, North Tama's Sara Stoakes won the 100, 200, 400, and anchored the winning sprint medley after getting the baton in last place. This year she won the 400, 400 hurdles, 800, and 1500 ( state meet 1A records in the 400 and 400 hurdles [first year to run hurdles]). Last fall she won the 1A cross country individual title. She is the class valedictorian, class president, and is involved with other activities.

We tried to convince her to go to ISU, no luck. Also no luck with the Dinsdale twins, they ended up at Nebraska last year. At least they stayed in the Big XII.

There were others on the track team, and a freshman teammate didn't place at state.

Each team has a limit of 2 people per event and 1 relay. For the large class system they allow 3 people per event. But not every event necessarily has the same number of competitors. So say there are 18 teams at the region meet, there will probably be 36 kids in the 100 meter dash, but maybe only 20 kids doing the pole vault. It makes a team try and develop an all-around team for each event.

MN did this for swimming too. Is it more respected in the Track and Field world? I know the swimming one was put on by the coaches association, not MSHSL, so a lot of coaches would opt not to have their teams participate in order to concentrate on Sections and the traditional State meet.

Similar to Troy Davis and 2000 yards.
