    Center Court Logos

Pat Forde's article on basketball court logos.

Was kind of fun to see the pictures of a bunch of courts with hideous looks. I think ISU has a pretty good balance going on.

Read that earlier today... I definitely agree regarding Tex A&M's court... just hideous in the colors and the logo, etc. Just bad...

    Forde missed one:

Watch out for the gigantic black hole sitting at center court. You may be sucked away to your death...

What about Texas Tech. Their court looks like a minor league baseball outfield fence. So many advertisements it is so stupid!

I like how he bagged on KU for the huge "lame cartoon bird" on their court.

I'd be careful in making this kind of comment. We need to grow our athletic budget and I would not be surprised if this is something that we end up doing at ISU. In fact, I would be shocked if Jamie is not currently looking at this potential revenue source.

Frankly, it is a growing trend...the selling of naming rights on fields/courts and of stadiums...more will continue to do it. Several years ago most college arenas had the name of the school on the front of the scorer's table...today, almost everyone has some sort of advertising. Back in the 80's most Major League parks had no advertising on their outfield walls...today I believe all do.

This even comes into play relative to academic buildings at the university. Once they were named after past presidents...today they are named after the top donors to the project.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Well at the beginning of the Master Plan Pollard said that the naming rights to the stadiums were not for sale. Texas Tech has at least 2 big logos of just O'Reilly Auto Parts and EVEN ON THE SWEATER VEST OF BOBBY KNIGHT. On Knight's sweater right below the logo for Tech there is the logo to O'Reilly. IMO this is even worse than just renaming the stadium because the name is just mentioned a few times during the course of the game but during the entire game you are seeing company's logos on the floor and on your coach.

Yes, it's pretty bad. Not as bad as their 1980s jerseys though.

In addition to the Black Hole in IC, I think they would fall into the "bad Parquet Faux Pas"

    (Parquet Faux Pas
Western Illinois, Texas A&M and Massachusetts (15). Just because it worked for the Celtics doesn't mean it will work for you. In fact, most schools with parquet floors are notably lacking in significant hoops tradition. )

Leave the the Hawks to fail twice!

He may not rename the stadiums or arenas but don't think he might not sell space on the floor at Hilton or on the field at Jack Trice.

LSU plays in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center but they have a big Cox Communications logo on their floor. I believe Oregon State has a logo on its football field.

These are sources of new revenue to the athletic department. This is happening all over the country. Most of Jamie's ideas are things that have been done elsewhere (he is being smart in "stealing" good ideas). Don't be surprised if this too comes to Ames Iowa!

One quick question...do you have a problem with the Nike logo being on our uniforms? I'm not trying to be a smarty pants...I just want to see where you perceive "the line to be crossed".

As I said before, I firmly believe this is coming. It is happening all over the country and it will happen in Ames. The reason is twofold:

    1) The university and the athletic department are looking for new revenue...this is a great source.
    2) Businesses are looking for alternate means of advertising. They know that people today either skip commercials on their DVR or they flip channels on their TV. They want to have their "ad" present while the event is being watched. Have you noticed how almost all TV graphics now shown during a game include the logo of some business...same concept.

If it significantly increases our athletic budget I'm all for any kind of corporate sponsors with the exception of JTS and Hilton:

    Tailgating presented by Mediacom anyone?

    Re: Center Court Logos

I know that it would be a good boost to the athletic budget but I guess I am just hoping that it is done in moderation. Like not filling almost the entire floor space with advertisements. Maybe if there is one big corporation that is wanting to shell out the money and then only have that logo on the basketball court.

As far as I'm concerned, we've got a lot of money to raise, and this is about the easiest way to do it. I think the only thing that is untouchable are the names of the venues, anything else should be sold. Sell the f*cking backboard for all I care.

Maybe we can force the players to tatoo the logos of sponsors on their bodies! Just to clarify...I am kidding here.

However, I am not kidding about the potential to see Maytag (or some other Iowa company) with their logo on our court or on our field.
