    I'm not so sure ....

Dylan Mitchell admitted that someone could have gotten seriously hurt, but said since no one did, he has no regrets.

"We walked out of school in handcuffs and got a standing ovation from everyone in the school. It was pretty sweet," he said. "I think it was totally worth it."
I guess it's cool because nobody did get hurt? I rather hope they DON'T drop the fines.

The one senior, Ryan Hayes, cannot attend graduation practice on Thursday but will participate in the graduation ceremony Friday.
Lol, we'll still let you graduate. But we won't let you practice so you'll look like a doofus walking the wrong way!

As opposed to when a food fight used to break out and teachers would break it up?

Why did it have to be police breaking up the fight instead of teachers? How did having the kids arrested make it safer?

Why does it matter who breaks it up?

Sadly in many districts teachers are not aloud to break up a fight.
There are several classes that need to be taken in the district that I work in for me to legally restrain a child.
I have seen some very good teacher fired because they broke up a fight and gave a student that started it a scratch in the process......
Too many ******** law suites in the world today.
That is the biggest reason the cops would be called in this case and if it was my school I would have done the same.

The students should get to graduate at all in my opinion. I would have made summer school mandatory. That kind of disturbance has no place in a packed cafeteria.

I don't disagree with the fact the teachers probably should have more control - or exert more control.

I'm just saying it's not breaking my heart that they went this route. That kid seems to need an attitude adjustment.

    Yep, this.

Same goes for administering medications (emergency or otherwise). So say you suddenly have one of your third-graders get stung by a bee at recess (if your district is lucky enough to still have recess, that is). They have a massive allergy attack and go into anaphylactic shock. The student has an Epi-pen, but the teacher can't administer it. Same with Ritalin, Claritin, Advil, and any other med. They all (usually) have to be kept locked away "safe and sound" in the Principal's office or Nurse's office.

If and when that ever happens to me, I'll risk the firing/lawsuit rather than watch a nine-year-old die on my classroom floor, but that's just me.

(I think we're on the same wavelength, I'm just venting a little bit)

Well, in a society that is as severely litigious as the one we live in, such as since a teacher laying one finger on a student, regardless of whether the situation (such as this) would warrant it or not is grounds for a lawsuit against the teacher and/or school and/or grounds for the teacher being separated from employment from the school, what else exactly is the school supposed to do? They need to get that fight broken up before someone seriously gets hurt and/or property is damaged, and at the same time they need to protect their staff from doing something that 95% of the time would be the appropriate action, but at this time and place would put their career in jeopardy.

With the highly litigious society that we live in, this is an absolute no-win situation for the school. No matter what happens, the school is going to look like the bad guy in the perception of society. If they attempt to stop the fight themselves, they open themselves up to a number of lawsuits because faculty laid hands on their children. If they call in the police to break up the fight (because the police would have the authority to use physicality to break it up), why the hell would the school overreact in such a way to involve the police for something as minor as a food fight? If they just allowed the students to finish the fight and someone got hurt, what the hell was the school thinking to allow something like a food fight to continue? No matter how you slice this one, the school was going to come out as the bad guys. And unfortunately for them, calling in the police to break up a food fight probably falls out as the best option on a Gantt Chart...

I can't wait to get home and flip on FoxNews for the latest on the lunchroom standoff. Police in riot gear circling the perimeter while students are jumping out of windows and running from the exits covered in.... Oh Jesus..... milk and yogurt.

Sean Hannity will blame it on video games. O'Reilly will blame it on Marilyn Manson.... Ann Coulter the special guest will blame it on the Godless liberals imposing their sick and sadistic ways on their children... etc.....

Let's get real... Last days of the school year and the kids had some fun and decided to have a little food fight. Can we please get serious here? Wow.

Yeah they did. And there look to be ramifications for those actions. Life lesson to be learned - but I'm going out on a limb and say it wasn't.
