It would help a little, not a lot, if you had to be 21 to get into the bar. Instead of being able to go into the bars at 19.

Good deal, until the ICPD can deal with what goes on between 12 and 3 am they should start to close some of them

Re: No New Bars In Iowa City

The city council of Iowa City spends way too much time worrying about a problem that really isn't theirs to solve. College kids are going to binge drink no matter what, and they are going to do it on campus no matter what, and the campus is in downtown Iowa City (no matter what). So it is going to happen. Additionally, it is legal to binge drink if you are over 21 and it isn't if you aren't. Enforcing the drinking laws should go a long ways to fixing the problem.

I disagree with that. IC PROMOTES drinking. They let 19 year olds into the bars and it is easy for them to drink there. The city turns their head the other way because so much money is being made by minors drinking. Then the cops have a hayday writing tickets and making money off of that. You look at all the problems their athletes have had with the law and 90% of them are a direct result of Ped Mall drinking. I'm not saying that they should or shouldn't make all bars 21+ (I'd love for Ames to be able to go 19 as the added money would really help Welch Ave), but the city could fix most of the problem if they really wanted to. Of course, when it comes up for a vote, the students vote it down anyway.
