Re: Congressman wants NBA to take out age limit

It's just my opinion but to me if you're 18 and want to/can be a pro basketball player why not go for it? Being a pro athlete is gainful employment and I would prefer that kids who don't want to be at college aren't there taking a scholarship from someone who does.

Re: Congressman wants NBA to take out age limit

I'm sure that he's also working on the NFL and MLB to remove all age restrictions in their CBA's also. Why should the NBA have to allow 18 yr olds but the NFL doesn't?

Re: Congressman wants NBA to take out age limit

Why shouldn't the NBA be able to impose an age limit? It's their league. Maybe Congress will start telling companies in the private sector that they can't require a college education, either.

I understood the steroids situation. Steroids are illegal, and things were getting out of control. What is the legal issue here?

I like the age limit, if anything it should be extended a year.

Harrison Barnes commits to ISU one day.

NBA changes ruling and HB goes pro the next day.

Last I checked, the NBA doesn't require a college education. Last I checked, the NBA doesn't much care what anyone's grades are.
This is all about the NBA's cozy relationship with the NCAA; to keep colleges as a "farm system." I applaud congress to break the system up.

...and yet you have issues with congress interfering with the NCAA's precious BCS.

Last I checked, the NBA has the right to do that. The NBA doesn't require athletes to go to college for one year. They require that they are at least one year out of high school, just like the NFL requires they are three years out of high school.

Again, I ask, what is the legal issue?

Re: Congressman wants NBA to take out age limit

Sure it's up to the NBA to make its own rules within the context of the law, but I wish that if you are able to play in the NBA, then you should, age shouldn't matter. If there's a 12 year old that can guard Lebron, then by all means...

There will be a legal issue if/when congress introduces and passes legislation, which I hope they do.
The NBA's "And One" rule makes a mockery of a college education; how many classes do you think Mayo and Rose attended during their second semesters? There is no moral reason to force athletes to attend a college if they really don't want to be there, and take up a seat that could be filled with a serious student.
What a great system: the NBA gets their future stars developed and marketed for free; the NCAA schools get revenue and victories from them. Meanwhile, no one can find them in class...
At least MLB says: sign with us out of high school, or go be a serious student for three years. The NBA should do the same.
