    Quick DirecTV question

My in-laws have DTV (I don't) and are upgrading their TV to HD.

Right now I believe they have a standard receiver, nonhd, non dvr - probably the standard one that came with sign up via Qwest about 2 years ago.

My question is - what are his options in upgrading to an HD, and possibly DVR? I don't care so much about particular models and don't need opinions on why one can't live without DVR.

Anyone upgrade receivers recently? Does he have to buy a new receiver? Will DirecTV upgrade it for him? And are there other costs associated with HD receivers? (Programming, if he gets DVR - is there a service fee?, etc).

    TIA

    Re: Quick DirecTV question

If they are out of contract they may be able to get a free upgrade to either a DVR or HD capable receiver, the HD DVR would be $199, plus any of those will require a 2 year contract extension. There is a seperate HD and DVR fee, the HD would be an additional $10, and the DVR fee $4.99 I believe. Best bet would be to call them direct and find out, as chances are if they go HD they would have to have a new dish installed as well (should be free).

Remember that you are not buying the receiver at the $199 price, you are just leasing it. When you are done with it, it has to be sent back to Directv.

    Re: Quick DirecTV question

I just upgraded one of my Direct boxes to HD/DVR for $99. If you squawk and female-dog enough, you may be able to get it for $20 like I did my first hd/dvr.
