NBA "No-Charge" zone coming to college

NCAA tries to take 'charge' under the rim - Sports - News & Observer

I've been begging for this for years, unfortunately they are implementing it for the first four years without painting the half-circle on the floor so it will likely never be called or be just terrible.

Re: NBA "No-Charge" zone coming to college

I like the idea of getting rid of the flopping under the basket, but I think it's crazy to add this rule without putting the semi-circle on the floor. Now we'll be asking officials to decide not only whether it's a block or charge, but also to decide exactly where on the court the contact occurred - and to do all of that in a split second. It's going to lead to more controversy during the game.

I would love to see the NCAA do something to reduce the calls against the defender when the offensive player initiates the contact. There are so many times when we do a great job of staying between the offensive player and the basket, but we get called for the foul when the offensive player jumps into our guy and initiates the contact.

Duke is screwed...once they get a half-circle so the officials judgement is taken out of the equation.

Even with the half-circle, the officials still make a judgement... I've seen officials blow this call in the NBA...

I don't think it will be a big deal to go without the painted lines. The refs have to make a split second decision, so it's not like they're staring at the defender's feet to determine position anyway. The refs know when a defender is under the basket, and they can make calls accordingly. I hate watching guys flop and it's getting too hard to drive the lane, so I'm happy they're making this change.

We've seen officials blow every call. However it is much easier to screw up without the circle.

I think it would be better if they just put the semi-circle under the basket. Yes it is still a split second judgement, but anything to aid in the decision making is better, and it at least gives the opportunity for more uniform calls.

Agreed. I hate playing pickup ball with some guys because they drive the lane and I may not be the highest jumping guy in the world to block their shots... but I'm quick enough to stay in front of them at all times. So they jump into me... I take an elbow to the face... they miss their shot and call a foul on me for simply standing in their way to the basket... no contact with my arms or anything... but what can I argue... it's pretty much the same way in college and NBA.

The more I think about it... the less I like the idea of a circle for the foul call. Yes it puts more power into the official... but you don't have to deal with the... "did he make the 'right' call?" and all the replays trying to determine if the foot was on the line. The purpose is to get rid of flopping under the hoop... so let the ref look at the player if he's flopping rather than look where his feet are and miss seeing the actual contact itself.

Re: NBA "No-Charge" zone coming to college

This really won't be that revolutionary in college ball, whether or not there's a circle painted. Plenty of college refs already call the game like the pro game is called under the rim, this just legitimizes what is now largely, though not uniformly, a de facto rule.

    1) There's no crying in baseball

    2) There are no charges in pickup basketball.

Every foul is a judgement. Without the circle Duke will never get called.

They don't spend much time in the NBA on reviewing that call. I don't think it's reversible but time isn't a factor. If I was a ref I'd prefer the circle.
