Getting to know Iowa State football

Hello, Cyclones. My friends and I are University of Houston students and huge college sports nerds. Faced with a summer of no college sports, we've decided to do a brief preview of all 120 Division 1-A football teams, and today we got to ISU. I was especially looking forward to writing up ISU, since my dad is an alumnus. I've been lurking on this board for a few days to help get info, and I want your feedback. Did I screw anything up? Did I miss anything important? (You can read the preview here.) Also, your site is listed in the article as a top web destination for ISU.

    Good luck!
    Go Cyclones!

You have done your homework! Great stuff. I do think you are a big optimistic in our overall record, but we will take it!

The main story with ISU football will be a REALLY REALLY bad defense. Probably one of the top 10 worst in D1.

Our offense is pretty solid. Lots of weapons and a decent Oline.

Re: Getting to know Iowa State football

Sounds about right. Our defensive front 7 is awful. I'm talking just downright pathetic. However, I would expect that with Rhoads & Burnham putting their heads together, there has to be some improvement. I believe the only blueprint I've seen that works effectively against the spread offense is a speedy defense and an inside pass rush. Well, we've got neither, so our defense will likely struggle again this year unless we can create A LOT of turnovers.

...oh yeah. Not a bad site either. I'll frequent it.

Appreciate the feedback guys (I'm one of ElViento's co-bloggers and live with the guy).

I don't have the Cyclone family connection, except my uncle Tom was Dan McCarney's lawyer and always spoke very highly of ISU. Also, I was very impressed with the ISU turn out at the Houston Bowl several years ago. Even though he did a good job with the ut-austin defense in 05-06 I was always skeptical of Chizik and it really seems like Rhoads is the kind of guy who can be successful in Ames.

I'm going to be rooting for you guys next fall, especially against texas a&m and baylor (who our former coach Briles ditched us for).

Oh and I was wondering if Paul Rhoads will keep continuing to recruit Texas.

I know there were some Lone Star state kids on McCarney's teams and UH beat out ISU for a defensive tackle from TX a year ago (FWIW the kid left the team after a redshirt year).

I enjoyed the write-up also, and also like that you're not afraid to inject opinions and predictions.
Regarding your somewhat sketpical take on Tom Herman: he seems very impressive, and really put on a show at the coaches clinic. However, it is not lost on a few of us that his offensive numbers have always come while he was coaching under Dave Bailiff (Texas State and Rice). It will be interesting to see if he can be as effective now on his own.

A little, yeah. I understand why he left (the big 12 and increased salary) but wish he hadn't plundered the staff prior to the Texas Bowl. It only hurt more when the team came less than 10 yards short of beating TCU with an offensive staff consisting of a TE coach, grad assistant, a former player and the back-up QB. Water under the bridge now.

I'm a big fan of the underdog anyway and I typically root for ISU when I'm flipping around during fall Saturdays.

FWIW Tom Herman's offense at Rice got a lot better in the second half of the '07 season and was phenomenal for all of last season (I still have nightmares of the 56-42 beating they put on us in the last week of the year).

I'm a big fan of the underdog anyway and I remember giving my aggie friends lots of crap when they left early in '05 during an ISU butt-whoopin' in College Station.

Wow, I know it is best to be self-serving as a CFB coach and the need to get started/be-all in, but that seems over the top. You would have to think a decent guy would have been able to hold off a couple of weeks and let his assistants coach in the game. I have never really cared about Baylor in the past, but will now definitely root against them. I have been to Waco for a couple of football games, and the stadium's location/tailgating was not too enjoyable.

Wasn't 2007 his first year at Rice? SO its understandable that the O is a little behind learning a new system. I believe its quite different than what they ran before.

Yeah, the other writer (besides me and ElViento) of the blog went to high school in the Waco area and is not a big fan of the place.
