ISU has top 10 recruiting class

Didn't see this posted anywhere else, but it is good to see one of our programs doing well.

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team’s incoming recruiting class has been ranked No. 10 in the country by PrepVolleyball.com. It marks the highest ranking in school history by the website, which tabbed last year’s Cyclone newcomers No. 25.

“This is another milestone for our program,” ISU head coach Christy Johnson said. “Recruiting is a tireless and exhausting job, and to get the 10th-ranked class says a lot about what (assistant coach) Dawn Sullivan has done out on the recruiting trail. We are hopeful this class will have a great impact on our program and help us take another step up in our goal to be one of the best teams in the nation.”

We are very, very lucky to have Christy Johnson as our coach. Not to get off on the Pollard beat, but keeping her around is a HUGE plus.

This kind of sucess in any sport is a plus. I'm sure we would all like to have it in football, but at least it is in something.

We should do whatever it takes (within reason) to keep her here.

Re: ISU has top 10 recruiting class

I honestly think the only way she leaves is if Nebraska offers her the head job there, and I don't think Nebraska is really looking right now. I would have to say a good comparison would be Gable going to Iowa because there wasn't a spot from him at ISU. Only this time ISU is the benefactor.

Re: ISU has top 10 recruiting class

What Christy Johnson has done in her time here has been nothing short of a miracle! If (when at the rate she has our team improving) we ever get a volleyball practice facility, her name would have to be on it.

CJ is what Cyclone athletics should be all about. Wonderful person, and a great coach. Positive all the time. Truly believes the "why not Ames, and why not us" thing. She is a flat-out winner.

Re: ISU has top 10 recruiting class

It's been a long time since I have been on campus. Where do they practice now?

If she has another class like this, she may have a shot at a national championship. Pollard better keep her, and not lose like he did the gymnastics coach. Minor sports, but still important, especially for recognition.

They practice at Hilton the majority of the season. Some practices are held at Forker.

They actually do allot of practices at forker. Now that basketball has its own facility now, they should have forker almost all to themselves.

With basketball moving to its new facility, expect volleyball to use Forker less. Their offices will move to Hilton, so it only makes sense that they practice there. And since there will be no competition for court time, it's a no-brainer. The only reason to ever be at Forker is to use multiple courts at once.

I still have a bad feeling if the spot opens at Wisconsin - but like NU, they won't be looking anytime soon I would think.

But to echo some of the sentiments here - I've talked to CJ on a couple occassions and she seems genuinely happy at ISU and Ames. I don't know where her salary falls in line with other programs - but I think it's at least respectable. That would be about only reason to move, IMO. I've heard her talk in the past about getting more of a volleyball facility, and moving out of Hilton. Not sure where she stands on that now. Otherwise, she's clearly proven that she can win and recruit to Ames, Iowa - can't see that being a problem.

Re: ISU has top 10 recruiting class

At this point, the Wisconsin job would almost be a step down. ISU swept UW in Madison in the 2007 NCAA Tournament, and beat them 4 sets to 0 in Madison this spring.

CJ's goal to BEAT Nebraska. She's in a great situation here, and has no reason to leave. As long as she keeps winning at this level (or higher), and her players stay out of trouble, she'll probably get what she wants.

I thought that honor was reserved for Bill Fennelly.

Bill and Christy are two current coaches that will be considered 'Cyclone Greats.'
