    Organic Milk Down the Tubes

People want green, want clean, but will they pay for it now?

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/29/us..._r=1&th&emc=th

While most conventional farmers are accustomed to withstanding price volatility, “organic hasn’t weathered this kind of storm,” said Mr. Allbee, the state’s agriculture secretary. Farmers are finding that organic food is not for every consumer, he said, “and doesn’t guarantee that you will have a market forever.”

Paying 2 or 3 times normal for food that is grown that way is foolish in my opinion.

No one wants to pay $7 for a gallon of milk anymore.

Then don't buy it - and leave those who want it alone.

Hey, I'm not lying to myself about the health benefits of organic milk, but Picket Fence Creamery 2% milk is so good it makes my toes curl.

I don't drink a lot of milk, but I don't mind spending another buck or two to have a really delicious glass of milk to go with my big cookie before bedtime.

So like I said, I worked on an Organic Farm for 2 years. The cattle were not shot up with RBST's. You are saying that the RBST's are magically placed inside the cattle that I helped raise???

    C'mon. Seriously.

Most farmers would love to be able to have less inputs put into the animal or crop for more income. The fact being, that if all ground was organic, the world would currently starve.

    +1

Organic is a nice niche market for people who want to buy it, but after that it's a joke. Anyone that thinks all food should be produced organically is a fool, a foolish fool.

Really?? $7.00 a gallon?? You are getting ripped off. It is 5.29 for a gallon at WFM (Organic Milk).

I'd recommend buying All-Natural Milk. It still has no hormones, just not Organic. To be organic you have to go through the USDA, feed cattle all organic feed, and have organic shipping standards. Everything throughout the process of milking the cow to getting the milk on the shelf is overseen by a 3rd party (USDA).

Price is higher because of the fees laid upon the farmer. Plus it takes more man labor (higher labor costs). I can tell you that stores don't make money selling organic milk (maybe the ones selling in for 7.00, set their margins up way too high). Most stores (after spoilage) probably lose money but carry it so they don't lose those customers.

All-Natural is hormone free. Cattle are treated with antibiotics if they are sick but their milk automatically gets sold as conventional until the antibiotics have left their system.

Most important things to consider when buying Milk....
    1. No RBSTs.
    2. Treatment of the cattle

Don't let anyone fool you into thinking that Organic is a scam.

Re: Organic Milk Down the Tubes

I'm a believer that people should have a choice. I'm not for Organic being a standard.

People need to make educated choices on what they put into their bodies. Having people say it is a scam are not ones to listen to.

The US is responsible for feeding the world so the processes of non-Organic farms feeds that hunger. I'm all for that. I'm not for putting it in my body though because of several different health related effects.

RBST's are one I choose not to put in my body. It is a growth hormone, steroid.

You can do what you want. (Isn't amercia great)

I think you have been brain-washed into thinking certain things are better for you than others.

Have you heard that people can die from drinking to much water?
