    Next Big Sport to Decline

I was thinking back to some of the sports that used to be major events, but now are largely out of the mainstream.

PBA Bowling - My parents used to watch every Saturday.
    Grand Slam Tennis - meh
Indy 500 - who won? NASCAR crushed it
Horse Racing - Just me, or is the Derby no longer a big deal?

Some could argue Hockey is already there, but what is the next Big Sport that will be out of the mainstream 10 years from now?

Golf - Is life after Tiger doomed?

Call me crazy, but the NFL.
Maybe not to the point of being out of the mainstream, but there's no way it's going to sustain it's current level of hype for very long.

The NBA I would argue is almost already out of the mainstream.
MLB will probably remain relatively popular, IMO, just because it's accessible and relatively inexpensive.

Re: Next Big Sport to Decline

If anything I think PBA is getting more popular. It's on espn every Sunday and you can always find it on ESPN Classic. Plus the typical bowling stereotype (tavern Hawk type person) is harder to find.

    Bowling is not a sport.
At least golf you have to be able to hit the ball straight and walk to the next hole.
Hockey is not going away. Have you seen how the northern states treat hocky. Kinda like we treat football, basketball, and baseball.
Beerpong is a fade. When I was college age it was quarters. I am sure some time in the future a generation will come up with another drinking game.
The sport I worry about losing popularity is curling. What would we do without it!

Re: Next Big Sport to Decline

    NASCAR could be in trouble

TV ratings are down an estimated 9% from last year, and down a whoping 21% from the high water mark set in 2005. And television advertising revenue has fallen 16%. Last year less than half of the races on the Cup schedule were sold out. The current economic climate has also seen a reduction in sponsorship for individual cars, and the fate of the US auto industry could have a dramatic effect.

With all that being said, I wouldn't miss it if it were gone.

The NFL is facing a "Perfect Storm" of some sorts - an expensive sport in a down economy, popularity unlike what it has ever seen before, and an upcoming labor dispute that could end with lockouts/strikes. The NFL and the players' union had better learn the lessons of what happened to baseball after the 1994 strike or it's going to lose all those fans it worked so hard to gain, especially if an entire season is canceled over it.

I don't think the NBA is quite out of the mainstream yet, but I think it's certainly headed in that direction. You have a commissioner that is only interested in seeing a LeBron v. Kobe final. They've already had one referee outed for fixing games - who knows how many more of them there are. And even if the refs aren't dirty, they're certainly making poor calls on the court. Granted, all referees in all leagues make mistakes - but do they seem to miss 10-20 calls per game as seems to be the norm in the NBA anymore? I think the NBA is certainly losing it's credibility at a record pace.

Re: Next Big Sport to Decline

I see MMA on the decline big time, they overhyped the hell out of that. I don't see the big 3 (NFL, NBA, MLB) ever falling off the way bowling or Indy racing have, but the NBA is teetering on the edge of being a complete joke.

Re: Next Big Sport to Decline

I think the NBA will be huge overseas and huge here during the playoffs. Its a fairly cheap sport to play, unlike football, golf, baseball, which require more than a basketball and a playground hoop.
I would like to see lacrosse get bigger here. I also enjoyed playing it in grade school PE and enjoy watching it on ESPN.

In college we played Moosey Moose probably more than beer pong. And my ice cube trays still say give and take on them in sharpie.

Re: Next Big Sport to Decline

I don't know what's wrong with me, but I've watched the NBA almost every night for a couple weeks now.

I could see the NFL coming back down to earth. The NBA, NFL and MLB aren't going anywhere.

MLS keeps chugging along. Several expansion teams in the next few years could boom or bust the league.
