    Question about DC Burnham

I think I was just about as excited as anybody that we got such a great DC in Burnham from USF, however I feel like I don't know or hear a whole lot about him. Is this because we're in the middle of the off-season? Is he known as a great recruiter (I would imagine so) and is he spending a lot of time on the road? A recruiting schedule has to be a grueling time, which to me is better suited for younger coaches such as Coach Ash. I guess as a fan I would like to know more about him.

    Re: Question about DC Burnham

My guess is his recruiting will be on select individuals. My guess we will hear a lot more about him as the season comes closer. Right now he's busy breaking down tape of our players, our opponents etc trying to game plan to each team. He's got his hands full with coaching, he has to improve a defense ranked 112th and position coach the linebackers which everyone thinks is the one place our squad needs to make a huge improvement to see the defense rise.

You can only have 7 coaches recruiting anyway. The main recruiters for ISu right now are obviously Coach Ash, Coach Bleil, Coach Wells, Coach Herman and maybe the younger Burnham. Things will heat up more come fall, but right now, things are solid, a lot of phone calls.

Coach Pope was brought in to recruit as well, and very much is!

    Re: Question about DC Burnham

I think we will see more of an impact from Burnham in the defensive scheme. He is amonster upgrade in that department.
I think he will also contribute to recruiting, but more as a talent evaluator (watching tape and running camps) and not as a guy who hits the road. I think the young guys will benefit from using Wally's connections as well. Just my opinion.

This tends to be my opinion as well. Get the young coaches to the schools and houses, and then let them meet Wally when they come for a visit, finally let CPR seal the deal!

    Re: Question about DC Burnham

I'm excited to have Burnham as our DC. We finally have a guy at that spot who has been doing it his entire coaching career instead of taking a chance at an up-and-comer at the position (granted, it's a short-term benefit as he teaches his son to take over). Now, I'm not going to be unrealistic and say simply by adding someone as respected as Burnham is that we're going to have the nation's best defense next year - it may not even be in the top 50. But it's going to be leaps and bounds better than next year (not that that will take much) - because scheme is everything.

Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice?
Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

That's why I really like the blend of youth and experience in out coaching staff. Those young guys like Ash have the enthusiasm to hook the kids and then Rhoads and Wally can reel 'em in.

Maybe we wouldn't have senior Burnham, if we didn't hire also hire junior. This minor case of nepotism is a page out of Cheez-its playbook; I sure hope that Wally is grooming more than just his own son to move up in our system.

    Re: Question about DC Burnham

I think that while Herman is generating more hype/optimism (well deserved in his own right), I think that Burnham could be the one that makes the bigger impact for us right away.

I realize that the Defense should be easier to improve, but Burnham has had decades of success in several top conferences. If recruiting can get him the horses, I think we will have a good chance to return to the solid defensive play we had the first half of this decade.

    Re: Question about DC Burnham

I agree. The offense put up some good numbers last season. The main area focus with that unit will be punching the ball in the endzone because we failed to convert quite a bit in the redzone last year. Other then that the O was pretty damn good moving the ball up and down the field.

Burnham has an entire defense that he basically has to rebuild from the ground up. We do have some talent on defense and I think with his experience and expertise we could see some drastic improvement on that side of the ball.

Either way Herman and Burnham are 2 of the best hires as far as coordinators go in ISU history. Now they just have to validate that with performance on the field.
