    Barney and Mac

I spent the weekend with a HS staff down in Tulsa who are very familiar with our new staff, but also knew quite a bit about the old staff.
They told me that Mac had been interviewed for the DC at Okie State (didn't get it) and that Cotton was a finalist for the OL spot at LSU, but they didn't know if he got it or not

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

    Re: Barney and Mac

Wow! How embarrassing to go from Big 12 head coach to not getting a d-coordinator job the next year in the same conference. Maybe he just needs to take the year off.

    Re: Barney and Mac

I don't think that is that bad. Wasn't that James Dickey on OSU's bench Saturday night? He was the head coach at Tech I believe. He seemed to have an instrumental role during the game. He seemed to be enjoying his coaching as well. I always thought he did a good job at Tech...

As for Mac, that would be a good job and who knows why someone else got the job. Connections? Who knows?

Seriously? I have no idea how that can be after the development and performance of our O-Line under Cotton.

    Re: Barney and Mac

I just think it's interesting how opposing coaches, referees, assistant coaches, players, etc...had nothing but great things to say about Mac when he was the head coach at Iowa State, but now that he's looking for a job nobody wants him.

Maybe they all think he's a great guy; just not a great coach.

    Re: Barney and Mac

He did not get the LSU OL job. That went to Greg Studrawa who had been Bowling Green’s OC for the last four years. He replaced Stacy Searels who left to become the OL coach at Georgia.

There is no doubt that "connections" can help in a coaching search but people really want proven results. Unfortunately for McCarney his resume' is not too good.

As for James Dickey...Okie State is a good place for him...a "cheaters den" so to speak. Eddie Sutton cheated everywhere he coached (even got caught cheating at Kentucky if you can believe that). I would assume his son will use the same tactics. For those of you that don't recall, NCAA sanctions were placed on Texas Tech (I think they lost 9 scholarships in the last 4 years of Dickey's tenure) while Dickey was HC. It is one of the reasons they hired Bobby Knight...they wanted someone that would run a clean program!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

That is absolutely what the issue is. I don't think you would have found a lot of people playing under Vince Lombardi talking about how much they loved him. They didn't say that until they were much older and realized what he had done for them.

A coach isn't hired to be the players best buddies, he is hired to win games. I would have to say for the most part, you can't do both at the same time.

Exactly. When was the last time you heard a coach rip on another one publicly. They all pat each other on the back hoping the favor is returned someday knowing in the vast majority of cases their days at any one particular school are numbered. That would be a fun press conference however. "Boy, I'm glad we're playing Whatever State this Saturday. Their game plans are pretty basic and the players are not very well prepared" vs the endless "Football State is a very well coached team."

Barney has a Bo Pelini connection from Nebraska days - they may get along. Hope he gets it. Hope is not a method.

Wasn't meant to be a negative thread.
I guess it shows what a lot of the posters think of the state of Cyclone football when he left.

More succinctly I think the plight of "Barney and Mac" shows what people in decision making roles at other schools (not posters on this site) think of the state of Cyclone football at the end of the McCarney era. There is a reason these guys are not "hot commodities"!

This is right on the money.

The Big XII South coaches, fans, and media loved DMac. The media loved him because he always made time to talk with them while most coaches would not. The media doesn't get to talk to very many head coaches. They usually talk to the opposing team's analysts and color guys or, if they are lucky, an Asst.

Fans liked him because he was always positive and never threw anyone under the bus. He was also very complimentary of opposing teams' fans.

Big XII coaches liked DMac because they had an excellent chance to chalk up a conference win. You have to think DMac and Cotton do not command a lot of coaching respect or they would have landed a job by now. There have been numerous job openings and these two haven't gotten much of a sniff. I wish both the best of luck, but their resumes aren't real strong.
