Thumbs up Going to Valencia, Spain for two months- any tips?

I'm studying abroad through ISU in Valencia, Spain (along the Mediterranean) for about two months. I'm mostly going to learn Spanish (never had any before) but I'll be taking International Entrepreneurship as well; both classes are in English with ISU students and professors. I leave tomorrow afternoon.

Has anyone spent time living in Spain, as opposed to just passing though as a tourist? I'd love any input you can give that would affect my packing. What to bring, not to bring, etc. Cultural stuff is fine, too!

Pack what you need, then cut it in half. I'd even bet you still pack too much. My time in Spain is one of my dearest memories thus far, enjoy yourself.

Can you ship me some paella?

Ask the waiter for Spanish rice (I bet that goes over about as well as asking a French waiter for French fries)...

Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice?
Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

Re: Going to Valencia, Spain for two months- any tips?

It's hotter than blazes there in the summer (even though you will be on the sea). I did an internship for my graduate program in Barcelona for 3 months this past summer. I packed two ISU hoodies for wearing around town at night and for cooler days. Well it turns on those never came out of the drawer. Don't bother packing anything long sleeve...you will never wear it as it never gets cool at all.

Randomly out with some other people in my program, I ran into students from the ISU group you are going with at a Barcelona bar. They had come up to Barcelona to visit one of the weekends. Kinda crazy.

The food is awesome, the beaches are great (best if you are away from cities), and the people are generally friendly. Don't forget to visit Barcelona and learn some Catalan. Was probably the best 3 months of my life....have a ball.

Re: Going to Valencia, Spain for two months- any tips?

Take a picture or make a list of everything you have before you go. I studied in Caceres for a semester (Fall 07) and the airline lost all of one of the guy's luggage when he got there. That way you can at least have proof if you have to make a claim.

Make friends with some of the locals if you can. They know all of the best places to eat/drink/dance. The nightlife over there is incredible, so be ready to not sleep much and have a hell of a lot of fun.

Re: Going to Valencia, Spain for two months- any tips?

I disagree with the long sleeve shirt thing. You'll see that a lot of the locals wear a very light cotton long sleeve shirt to keep the sun from flaying your skin. In fact, don't bring any, buy a couple pairs while you are there, and wash them in your hotel room sink. Same thing with pants. Long, light pants will keep you from looking too tourist-y.

Eat thee some jamon. You cannot import it (damned USDA dogs...grumble) but despite it's ugly looks and sometimes suspect smell, it is marvelous.

With any luck, your hotel is at least semi-inclusive and has decent food. The fresh seafood is out of this world. Take chances with food.

Go out and do. Being overly cautious is something you will regret later. Just be sure to ask the experienced folks with you about things, to make sure they are on the up and up.

Tapas rocks. There I go with food, again. So does the local wine.

    Have fun.

BTW, shopping is one of the best ways to pick up vocabulary.

Re: Going to Valencia, Spain for two months- any tips?

I'm actually staying with a host family (and another ISU student) about two miles from the campus. Sounds like I have a mom and dad, high school brother and sister, and a dog. Meals won't be a problem, as I'll eat most of them with the family. Same with laundry- I'll do it at the house. And yes, I definitely plan on tapas and paella and wine and partying any time I get the chance! As for the beaches- I can't wait, but I'll definitely be wishing my girl was there with me...

What do college students wear to go out clubbing/bars/partying over there? I assume they probably get at least as dressed up as US college towns.
