    Harden placed on DL

Harden goes on Cubs DL with back strain | Hardball

SAN DIEGO- The Cubs placed Rich Harden on the 15-day disabled list with a back strain on Friday, and inserted Randy Wells into the rotation for Saturday's game.
Harden felt a twinge in his last outing last Sunday, and in a subsequent side session this week in St. Louis. With Harden's injury, the Cubs don't have to make any move with the bullpen to reactive Carlos Zambrano, who starts tonight against Jake Peavy.
Harden will be eligible to return during the Atlanta series, which begins June 2nd at Turner Field. It's his seventh stint on the disabled list since 2005.
We are the Cubs. This came out of nowhere.

    Re: Harden placed on DL

It almost sounds like they're doing this just to give Harden some rest and to give Wells another couple starts. I won't get worried unless this DL trip gets extended. I guess that explains why the Cubs didn't announce Saturday's starter until, oh, right now.

    Re: Harden placed on DL

I really think this isn't that big as long as its only 15 days simple because it allows the Cubs to get a look at Wells and also to ive the Padres an up front look at him in case the cubs can include him in a Peavy deal?

Cubs can't add salary, with the Tribune in bankruptcy court and Ricketts not taking over yet.

You also don't put an ace-type pitcher on the DL to "get a look" at someone.

    Re: Harden placed on DL

I understand you don't put an ace on the DL to get a look at someone. But with his injury history and the way Wells has thrown this may have been an easier than normal decison because of Harden's history

Harden hasn't been an "ace-type" pitcher this year. More like "league average-type" pitcher. The timing is just really convenient with the Cubs needing to clear a roster spot, and a rookie pitching well in the rotation. It wouldn't surprise me if the Cubs gave Harden a couple weeks to clear his head and rest.

Peavy better look out, because if this Harden thing is more serious than we know about, and they continue to lose to the cardinals...he WILL be went after, and i don't think price will be a factor because of all the injuries and the inconsistancy in the rotation and bulpen they do need another solid starter.

Again, basically all that I've read says they can't afford to bring him in right now, at least not til Ricketts has full control.....which hasn't happened yet, I believe.

ya, nobody thought they had money to get harden either.

But you're point is valid. I just don't see money being a factor if it comes to that point.

I would really just like to see the entire team healthy and playing together. I think once they regain everyone, they will win constantly! and when i say win, i mean kick the crap out of everybody.

Harden's contract is chump change. Peavy's is gigantic. It will make a difference. I'm not saying he can't land with the Cubs, but it'd take some juggling of stuff, and they'd more than likely have to dump a decent salary elsewhere to get him.

    Re: Harden placed on DL

well they came really really close to getting him this last offseason, and acording to peter gamons this morning on sc. Peavy's pricetag has dropped considerably. So, you do the math. It could be done, and if these injury things keep happening, it will be done.

It has nothing to do with what it takes to get him.

It has everything to do with being able to afford his contract.

Exactly. Getting him and keeping him are two different things (at least paying him is different).

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
Make this one for the ages!
