Why does Mac refuse to play CJ after the half?

I don't get it. We need scoring after the half, much like in the Colorado game, and Cory can't get in. It's not like we were shutting down their bigs in the second half anyways....I just have no idea why GMac won't put him in after the first twenty.

Re: Why does Mac refuse to play CJ after the half?

I'm not sure it's deliberate but I must say that Jessan did not have a good game tonight. If he was doing well I could see CJ not getting minutes. But with Jessan playing poorly (what was he 1-4 in FTs?), I could see CJ getting in the game in the 2nd half but didn't. Don't know why?

The only reason I could think of was him getting muscled around by OSU's bigs. Other than that I have no answer.

I'm sure he has his reasons for the rotation that he employs. Besides, I don't think anybody could really argue for more minutes for CJ than he played tonight...he didn't really do anything with the time he was given. I thought Marsden looked a lot better than he has tonight. He might not have had a lot of numbers but he seemed to be a lot more active. Our roster doesn't contain a whole lot of "clear cut players" that are head and shoulders above the others, so obviously Mcdermott is wanting something out of his posts in the second half that CJ hasn't provided. Otherwise, he would be in there. I still feel a lot more hopeful watching an effort like we saw tonight than some of our similar, fairly competitive games in the past. At least we've got young guys that are playing hard and defending. Given adequate time and personnel, we're going to be a good offensive team as well.

Im just glad I have Homan as my bodyguard, Eustachy joked. If I ever make it real big and get to drive a limo everyday, hell be driving it. I thought he came off the bench like somebody was stealing his cow or something.

I just have thought it's curious that he never seems to go in after the break. It's not like any of our other bigs were containing Boggan after the half as it was. Oh well.

Re: Why does Mac refuse to play CJ after the half?

CJ has some definite upside. He is small and undersized, but can work on that in the offseason. Jessan Gray is basically ineffective. He gets outmuscled (did you see where the OSU player just grabbed the ball out of his hands for the easy putback?), whipped on defense, and is basically no offensive threat at all. Plus, he is a senior.

Why not build for the future and give CJ the minutes he needs to develop? He hustles, plays decent defense, and can score (10 pts. in 10 minutes against CU). I am with you, I can't understand why he does not play more. It is baffling.

Re: Why does Mac refuse to play CJ after the half?

It'd be one thing if Jiri was doing much of anything, but his rebounds were offset by his turnovers (5) and his crappy shooting (2-8). Jessan didn't do anything. Rahshon had a decent game, but CJ could have had some of JG's minutes.

Re: Why does Mac refuse to play CJ after the half?

That is a good ?. But a better one is why the hell Jessan Gray played soo much?? CJ is a good player. He might have been beat by some OSU players like others have said, but he is 100X the player Jessan is.

CJ is the kinda player you mold your team after. Talent, hard work, and determination. If every player played like Cory, we'd be in the top 25. To steal a phrase from Dmac " No doubt about it!".

Johnson is not physically ready for inside play in the Big 12. Why destroy the kid's confidence? If you've noticed, it's their men against our boys physically and will be for some time.

What did Johnson Do to Merit More PT?

I guess I didn't see Cory do anything in the 1st half to convince me he should get more minutes in the 2nd half.

Who should he play before? Hubalek or W. Johnson.

Sure Hubalek didn't have a good game, but if ISU is going to win it's because Jiri & Mike get 30+ ppg. Even if Jiri struggles against OSU, the game action should improve his knowledge of G-Macs system & I'm sure G-Mac wanted Jiri to play out of his bad game.

Gray was given some minutes, but again maybe G-Mac thought if Jessan made a couple 3's we could get back in the game quick.

I am interested to see how Cory develops. He is overmatched at the center position in the Big 12. He works hard, but just gets pushed around. It will be interesting to see if he ends up at PF & can contribute at that position.

The reality is he might not be a Big 12 starter because he's an undersized PF and too slow SF.

Re: Why does Mac refuse to play CJ after the half?

I've only seen a couple of games on TV and was not too impressed with this kid. It looks like he is a project and may be a role player, at best, in a couple of years.

One thing is for certain, if he was proving himself to be better than others on the team and deserving of more playing time in practice...he would be playing. Make no mistake, a coach like McDermott is going to play his best players...the ones that give him the best shot at winning. Since he is evaluating this in practice every day, I will trust his judgment on this.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.
