    Where are the worst drivers?

Where the Worst Drivers Live- Yahoo! Autos Article Page

Here is an article listing the states with the best and worst drivers. Here's the break down for the Big XII states.

    #4 - Kansas
    #5 - Nebraska
    #8 - Iowa
    #15 tie - Colorado - Missouri
    #17 - Oklahoma
    #24 - Texas

I was surprised Missouri was listed so high after living there for 6 years.
It is a common fact that cars in Missouri cost $650 less to buy than anywhere else in the country because they come without turn signals.

Where do you think the worst driver are?

Anywhere in Illinois if its close to the Mississippi. Ive been run off the road twice by people trying to pass someone and both times it was Illinois drivers.

Thank you!!!! I've lived here two weeks and thought I was going crazy but I'm glad to see that someone else realizes that the only people using turn signals around here have out of state tags!

Re: Where are the worst drivers?

I have lived in Iowa, Minneapolis, and now Florida. I have driven in California and many other states during vacations as well. It is not even a contest. Florida is the worst. I can't even begin to describe how bad the driving is in South Florida. (Ft. Lauderdale/Miami)

Another thing is they don't do is creep out into the intersection to make a left hand turn at a light. They'll wait at the white line and wait the entire green light has passed and will never go on yellow. But they would honk at me when I did it. I was once stuck behind a lady for 3 light cycles till she went through.

That's just a different driving style. In the U.S. they used have a "drive defensively" ad campaign. That would get you killed over in Italy. You need to drive offensively to survive. If you are ahead of the car in the lane next to you by a nose and you want that lane, you take it.

Re: Where are the worst drivers?

I just finished driving from Austin to Ames, Ames to St. Louis, and St. Louis back down to Austin. No question the worst drivers in that 2000-mile trek were from Missouri, specifically east and central Missouri (between St. Louis and Springfield).

Re: Where are the worst drivers?

Before I even looked at the list, I would have put Wisconsin at the bottom. You would think people would know how to drive in winter conditions because they live in them half the year, but they don't. It's so frustrating. I can't believe they are #1.

If Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota are all in the top 10 I'd hate to drive in some of these other states.

Glad to see that DC is way toward the bottom. The Beltway at nearly any time of day is insane.

Additionally, I can attest that Rhode Island deserves to be where it is, as well as Connecticut. People just fly through those states. Lots of commuters.

Re: Where are the worst drivers?

Michigan was the first state that came to mind for me. If you've ever driven down to Florida by way of Atlanta, the traffic moves along quite fast in both lanes. But there are always those jerks that hang out in the left lane and hold up everything, when they could easily pull into the right lane. 9 out of 10 of those left lane abusers have Michigan plates.

Driving in Detroit is completely nuts, too. But, that has as much to do with the way that the roads are set up as anything.

If you drive north through Detroit, on anything but the interstate, it is just a series of drag races as you hit stoplight after stoplight at 8-mile Road, 9-mile road, 10-mile road, 11, 12, and so on. I listened to the Marshall Mathers LP like 6 times in the time it took me to go 15 miles.

Re: Where are the worst drivers?

I absolutely disagree with where they have New York rated. Most people think people in New York are the worst drivers, but I disagree. It takes a certain amount of skill to drive in New York, and midwesterners are just not taught it. Defensive driving tactics do not work in New York, and all of their drivers know it. Let this one mull in your minds a little bit - there are countless millions of drivers on the road everyday in New York, and you hear of maybe 10 accidents at most on a daily basis. Another thing - people who are not comfortable driving there DO NOT DRIVE. My cousin is afraid to get behind the wheel. Instead of gutting it out and causing problems on the road she has other people drive her.
