Ok, so honestly, this was the first thing that popped into my head. Upon short reflection, the American soldier, police officers and firemen.

    Re: Courage...

Courage? Since my definition of courage is one who overcomes fear, my first pick is a young woman I deployed with in 2003, who was scared to death. To the point that she would often become physically ill from the stress, yet showed up each and every day and did not only her job, but the jobs of others at times.

But my conventional pick, is Jacob C. Vouza. I can assume nobody here has heard of him, because he isn't Hollywood movie material, but his exploits, and the conditions under which he accomplished them are unmatched in human history.

Jacob C. Vouza - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There's more at the link, but Vouza was a retired Sergeant Major of the Guadalcanal Constabulary who became a coast-watcher and spied on the Japanese after they invaded the island. After the US invaded the island in 1942, he helped rescue an American pilot, shot down behind enemy lines and was later caught by the Japanese with a US flag in his loincloth.

When he refused to talk to interrogators, after being tortured, he was tied to a tree, bayonetted several times and left to die. Refusing to die, he untied himself, and dragged his partially disembowelled and bleeding body through several miles of jungle to American lines. He refused medical treatment until after he was able to report an impending Japanese attack he had discovered on his way back.

He spent 12 days in the hospital and then left on a 30 day scouting mission for a raid. He then spent the duration of the war scouting/spying for our side.

Dude defined HARD, if not courage. His story remains semi-anonymous partially because he wore a loincloth and his skin was brown, and institutional racism obviated the kind of mainstream acclaim he deserved, but would probably reject. He was knighted, however, and received military awards for his deeds.

    Re: Courage...

rolling clones - I actually thought the same thing the first time i read the thread. Imagine being right behind that front plate of the boat, the one that is pinging from all the gunfire on it, the one that will swing down to let you jump into the water and onto the beach. Ready, go.

    That, is courage my friends.
