How many verbals at this point?

Does anyone know how many verbals the FB team has at this point in time? Does anyone have any idea of what the goals and expectations is for the number of signees?

Re: How many verbals at this point?

We have 15 verbals, 3 of which attend Iowa State and have signed LOI's already, The Chiz stated that he wants aroudn 23 commitments, which I see as a good possibility with the people that seem to be close to commiting, along with probably 1-3 in state guys who might get scholarships late, I would say we might even beat the 23 mark, who knows, lets wait and see

Which reminds me... Is there a max limit of scholly recruits a D1 team can each year? If ISU had 27 seniors on scholly, could it offer 27 new schollies? Also, what exactly is the situation with gray-shirts?
Thanks in advance for the info...

25 plus maybe a grayshirt plus vacancies from previous year. Do we have any of those? The three on campus jucos may have taken those spots, so we might go as high as 28-29 if we had recruits.

Re: How many verbals at this point?

Here is my understanding Nedrick, but I could be wrong.

Redshirt is a player who can participate in practices, but not play. By doing this, he does not lose a year of eligiblity to play and remains on scholarship.

Grayshirts are the same only I dont believe that are on scholarship. These players have to pay their own way for at least this one year.

Thanks for the help. Just out of curiousity, I wonder what the highest number of schollies has been given during one signing day. (Probably Marshall after their plane crash)

As recently as the 70's, there were no limits on initial scholarships. When Johnny Majors left ISU for Pitt, he signed a freshman class of over 70 players including Tony Dorsett. It was unheard of at the time, but paid off with a natioanl championship. Shortly after the 1st ititial limit of 35 with was put in place. It was eventually reduced to today's 25 initial with 85 total. The 25 hit about the time Walden came in which had more impact on his player shortage than the few scholarships that were taken away by the NCAA.

Johnny Majors actually took most of his ISU recruiting class with him, plus the class Pitt had been recruiting. Dorsett could have been a Cyclone.

Speaking of great running backs that could have been clones, Barry Sanders had it narrowed down to us and Osu.

Joe McKnight - example still not signed, how come Iowa State doesn't start shooting for these players. There are like 6 - 5 stars unsigned. Lets get this going

Re: How many verbals at this point?

If I am a big time recruit and Pete Carroll, Urban Meyer, or Mack Brown came to my door, I would probably be more excited than if a new coach who doesn't have his system in place came to my door. Ames is a tough sell---its cold, its kind of the unknown school of the Big 12, and has one of the smallest venues in the conference. With the expansion of Jack Trice and a new coaching staff with real recruiting ties, I think ISU can be one of the top 4 or 5 programs in the conference instead of being one of the worst.

Re: How many verbals at this point?

but the likelihood that you would ever play at most of those schools, USC, Florida is slim, a lot of good players spend most of their time on the bench, and many transfer to small schools!~
