    Top of the line Umpire

So my son is plays 8 year old league at Ft. Des Moines little League. The other day they had an umpire that must have thought scouts from the big leagues had showed up to scout him. He called strikes like a major league ump. He actually scared the first 8 year old kid with his boisturous call. The kid just turned and looked at him. When he call a kid out at first base (Only one ump per game in the 8 year old league) He did the double hop on one leg and punched him out. It was freaking outstanding. It was like watching comedy act during the whole game. I spoke with the guy afterword. Very nice guy. Just funny as hell watching a grown man throw down at an 8 year old game.

I agree, this would be fun to watch (unless it was my kid)

Ft Des Moines LL. When my son played there several years ago
the crazy parents were more entertaining than the games.

Re: Top of the line Umpire

Last year I had the joy of running the chains at my nephews Pop Warner football game. This was the first year the kids at our school district played football in grades 3 and up. There was a guy there that played college football at one point, but now gets his jollies off being a zebra. He called penalties on these little ***** for too many in the huddle (when the coach is allowed on the field with them at all times), having the wrong color mouth piece, offsides everytime a little guy moved an inch because his pads outweighed him, etc. It was ridiculous.
He was even yelling at us doing chains because it wasn't precise enough and had us coming out for measurements every other series. At that age level, I think you can eyeball it jack ***.
Don't get me wrong, the kids should know the rules - but come on.

I've been pretty lucky as a junior high coach to avoid refs like these. Usually the refs will tell us first what the kids are doing and give us a chance to correct it. The kids have to learn, and lets face it they just don't all pay attention in practice or really even care that much in junior high. At that age it's a social event. As long as there aren't any safety issues, I don't care if a junior high or lower level football game is called to the letter.

The refs for my son's basketball games (4th and 5th grades) were really good. When they would make a call, they would stop the game and explain it to the kids to make sure they understood what happened. I really appreciated that, because the kids learned almost as much from the refs as they did the coaches.

Re: Top of the line Umpire

We got "top of the line ump" against last night. I wanted to argue a call from the stands just to see if he would give me the heeve ho like an MBL ump. However I am not like that. This guy was money again last night. Even broke out the rule book when the other team tried to bring a kid back into the game to pitch. Top of the line ump went to the rule book to show them they could not do it.

I was the home plate ump last year for the Iowa Games. They have the old school chest protector you hold, then have to hold the clicker with the other hand. Parents kept yelling at me, "can you hold up the count?"
If anyone knows what its like to use that type of chest protector you know thats a pain in the butt...
