    Tipping

just a question to get others opinions. When going out to dinner, and ordering a nice bottle of wine, how do you tip on the check at th end of the meal?

For example, my hubby and I went out to a nice italian dinner and ordered my favorite bottle of wine. The bottle of wine ended up being more (about 1.5x) than the total of our 2 dinners. Do you tip a standard % on the total check, or do you factor in the price of the wine seperatly since it was a once and done service on it, rather than us ordering glass after glass from the server?

just curious how others handle the tip at the end of dinner in this case.

standard ... its about the ticket total, not the line items, IMO.

    Re: Tipping

Tipping has gotten out of control, but I usually go 20%.

I handle the total. I consider the beverage as part of the dining experience. It'd be different if it was a place where you brought your own wine to drink....

    That's what I do.

Pretty much 20 all the time. Unless the server does something to really aggrevate me - in which case I may leave nothing.

Unless the service is dreadful, ~25% of the total.

Disclaimer: My girlfriend does occasionally waitress so I'm a little biased.

This is generally how I tip. I will exceed 25% for exceptional service, but won't go below 15%. I also do it off of the whole total.

I somewhat agree. I have no problem tipping a server at most restaurants who is taking my order, and bringing me my food. I don't like being expected to tip the drink fillers at places like HuHot or at buffets. I understand that they aren't being paid well, but they aren't doing much either. Not compared to a waiter/waitress at a standard restaurant...

    Re: Tipping

I'll tip nothing if the person doesn't even do a thing. At the Tavern one time I ended up tipping the bartender instead of the waitress because he ended up getting me my bill and a refill for drinks. He went out of his way to do someone else's job, so in my mind the other person deserves nothing.

I usually hit around 15% of the total bill.

    Re: Tipping

Wow you guys are generous. I for one believe that the service determines the tip and I rarely go over 20%. The only place I tip more are places where I am a "regular". That and I tip based on the total bill. I will tip very low if theservice is horrible.

That and does anyone put tips in the "tip jar" in fast food places like subway and such. I worked one of these types of places in HS and we never had a tip jar. When did this become acceptable to ask for tips when you work at Subway or Quizno's?
