    Rec League Basketball "Guy"

So I'm playing in this rec basketball league and last night was our first game. I only know one guy on the team, but upon meeting everyone, it seemed like we had a decent squad and everyone would get along.

    ...but then the game started.

This dude on our squad is in his mid to late 30s and is well past his prime, yet he starts jacking up 3's, turning the ball over every time down the court and hacking the other team like he personally is playing hack-a-Shaq D on everyone. Now, much of this is to be expected in a rec league, so I had no problem with it, but this guy turned out to be the biggest jerk/d-bag in the world.

He was incessantly calling for the "rock", telling our big man to "finish hard and not like a *****", and best of all, asking the entire team where his helpside defense was after he got beat off the dribble every time on.

As bad as that is, it gets worse. We were down 6 at halftime and he inexplicably goes into a tirade during a team "huddle" that he called. He went on to criticize each guy on the team and proceded to tell us that he wasn't going to put up with "an effort like that" all summer.

The last straw came in the dwindling moments of the game when were down by 11 and he drove the lane and got fouled, but made his shot for nice and-1. He was knocked down and I extended my hand to help him up and he pushed my hand away and got up and went to the line. Instead of just shooting the free-throw, he intentionally rifled the ball at the rim in the hopes of collecting an offensive rebound and getting an easy score. Well he neglected to tell anybody else about this strategy and the other team easily got the rebound as we were surprised/shocked at what he did. He looks straight at me and yells, "what are you doing? Go after the ball!"

Having had enough, I told him to shut his ******* mouth or I would knock him out. After the game, he just left and didn't say a word. Everyone on my team voted after the game to give him back his money and kick off the squad.

Having lived through that experience, I would love to hear some similar stories about "softball guy" or "basketball guy", etc. from leagues you guys have been in.

I love finding that guy on the other team...then you know who your designated "Guy to drive on" is.

You guys kicked me off the team? Your best player? Fine ... I'll take my championship game else where.

I love these over glorious stories in rec sports... from BB to Softball to Golf League... Some people need to relax and have fun while trying win. Good call kicking him off.

The best part of having that guy on your Rec team...not passing it to him.

    Re: Rec League Basketball "Guy"

Your story was great. However it would have been better had he shown up with brand new gear on. Air Jordans, LeBron jersey, headband, you know that sort of thing. I love those guys. You should have just kept this d bag on your team for a while just for great stories. This way you are only getting one story out of the deal.
Also what is your problem. You should have been all over the boards.

    Re: Rec League Basketball "Guy"

I love playing against guys like that. Our company's male softball team plays in low level league. Most guys on the team are 21-30 years old. Last year we played a team of 50+ year olds. They talked all game about everything from how good they were to how our ball wasn't hard enough. Our team mostly just laughed it off. The best part of the whole night was when some dude's old lady stood up and asked if there was going to be brawl after the game after an ump made a bad call for their team at the plate. Mind you they were up by 4 runs at the time! I really hope I am never a loser like those guys!

Sounds like the Teammate from Hell and Beyond and then Back. He must have had a nickname like Devil D-Bag or Rocket Sock it Man.

It's not hard to tell in rec league ball who has actually played organized (high school or beyond) basketball or not...

    Re: Rec League Basketball "Guy"

I used to regularly play with "Volleyball Guy". Coed league and he would literally shove girls out of the way to hit the ball. He also grunted really loud with every hit and would get "hurt" going after an imposssible ball at least once per match. We had numerous talks with him about his danger to the other players but as suspected he just didn't get it when "game time" started. Where do these DBags come from? They never think that they have a bad game yet criticize and "coach" every player on the court whether they are on their own team or not. We only played one year with him and felt obligated as he was married to one of our friends. He just about broke my wifes ankle going for a spike that he hit into the middle of the net.
