    Looks like Barkema might

be riding some pine this year. Chizik seems to be going after a JC TE. He is also looking to bring in a freshman TE. He must not like the fact that Barkema has had some problems stepping up and catching the ball and not fumbling the ball. That was one thing that always made me mad. Walter Nichol splitting time with Barkema. Nichol was a stud.

he is a senior, Messersmith would only be a sophomore, I would say it might be more of a statement to what is behind him!

I don't think it is an indictment of anyone. Chiz is merely doing what all good coaches must do in recruiting - look at your roster and insure that you have quality players that provide depth and balance. Right now, Barkema and Tinlin will be Seniors, and then the only other TE's are Catlett and Schulz (both players with a good upside). LaMaak has often been thought to eventually move to OL or maybe even DL due to his frame, and we have no TE commitments for this class.

If the coaching staff is going to be able to run multiple sets, including two TE sets, recruiting a JC and freshman TE (who could redshirt) is a solid plan. Otherwise, if Schulz or Catlett were to get injured in 2008, you have limited your playbook or you would have to use a TE that had been with the program less than year assuming we would recruit a TE next year. Either scenario is not what you want and is part of the complaints people had with Mac's inability to develop depth to instill the "next man in" philosophy.

Also look at the possibility of eiter Catlett or Schultz, prolly Schultz moving to another position, maybe on defense!

Plus, no way Lamaak is a TE anymore, he is a lineman, he is prolly up to around 270-290 I would assume, plus he has good feet, he would be your prototypical lineman if he can keep his feet, he played QB his senior year at Kennedy and was a good post player, he seems fit to be a tackle!

Look for Messersmith to play H-Back, as he is a great blocker! McFarland our OC/OL coach says we will be using the H-Back position in our offense.

Barkema might not be the best receiver, but he is a good blocking TE.

I bet we will see a few posiiton changes dureing or after spring ball...

    Re: Looks like Barkema might

I doubt this has an adverse affect on Barkema. Chizik is just bringing in any players that may be able to help out. Plus, an injury to Barkema and no one behind him spells trouble.

I once heard Jack Whitver say that "It's a coaches job to recruit over you". It's the competition that makes players better. Ben should take this as a challenge and step up his game for his senior year.

Wow, I'd never read anything about him saying that. Thanks for sharing!

Just goes to show just how smart Jack was and still is. Too bad he's "wasting" his time in politics and not coaching football.

I'll never forget, 2002, at Iowa, 3rd and long - Jack found the open space and Seneca launched the ball across the field for a critical first down. I miss #26.

Always liked Jack Whitver. If I remember right he was a walk-on and earned a scholarship his junior year.

Saw Whitver catch a Seneca Wallace pass for a 50 yard TD against Texas A&M in College Station. ISU beat A&M 435 yards to 270, but A&M still won the game by 3 pts. A&M's Troy Farmer got loose for a 67-yard TD on a missed tackle. Everyone needs to see ISU play Texas A&M in College Station at least once. Awesome place to see a game and great fans.

    Re: Looks like Barkema might

I went to high school and played fb and bb with ben barkema, and even tho he is kinda of an **** to people he doesn't know - i hate to see the problems he has had with no holding on to the ball at ISU, which is very ironic cuz at Muscatine High School he had by far the best hands on the team. I really can see him stepping up this year in the passing game, if he doesn't i can easily see someone stepping in above him, but I wish him the best and being a former teammate of his and a diehard Cyclone i hope he has a great year, i would love to see him make a huge catch to win a game, so we don't bring him up around the 2004 missouri game anymore. I really do believe he will step it up in his senior year, bcuz he is a HARD offseason worker.

It just seemed that every single time we really, really needed a third down, Whitver was there.

My memory on this may not be the best, but I think Ben did not drop passes this past season like he did the year before. He seemed much improved to me.

    Re: Looks like Barkema might

well, partly the reason he didn't drop as many passes, is bcuz he wasn't thrown to as much and seemed to be used more as a blocker and i believe that reason was a direct result from his problems in '04 and '05 with drops on important plays and also fumbles after getting hit. here are some barkema stats for ya:

    2006: 11 rec. 106 yards 1 TD (Long of 21)
    2005: 18 rec. 244 yards 2 TDs (Long of 27)
    2004: 5 rec. 53 yards 1 TD (Long of 18)

as the #'s show, his usage in the passing game obvs was a setback...I know TE's are kind of a "luxury" position in football, but it would really be good to see someone who is more of a threat in the passing game (I'd like to see a TE who can run a few ppl over and get downfield after their catch for extra yardage.) That aside Barkema I think got MUCH better in the blocking scheme last year. If Chizik is set on running a more widespread offense, i find it hard to believe that Barkema is going to get the ball more than his average over the past 3 years.
