Nate Gallick coming back to ISU

This link was posted on themat.

Chattanooga Times Free Press | UTC’s Bono loses assistant Gallick

Great to see another of our former wrestlers coming back and I found it interesting that USA Wrestling is helping to fund the regional training center with a full time head coach.

Also, congrats to Coach Bono and his staff on improving the APR at UTC.

Welcome home Nate! -- this is great news and an indication that KJ will be putting together a fine staff.

Re: Nate Gallick coming back to ISU

This olympic training site can really put ISU into a great position. I thought it was a great idea when KJ mentioned it at the press conference. Does anyone know where it might be located at in town, or is it going to be using what ISU does?

Re: Nate Gallick coming back to ISU

I was wondering about who Jackson will be bringing in as assistants. This is a good pick, but in the story says he will be a "volunteer assistant". Forgive my ignorance, but what does that mean?

Also, has anyone else heard anything about any other assistants? A lot of people would like to see the Paulson twins come back as assistants, but for those who know wrestling way more than I do (I'm a big fan, just not that knowledgeable about the inner workings), why is that a good idea?

    Thanks.

"Chris was good about letting me travel and train, but I dont think I was being fair to the team or myself. I was in Russia preparing to compete, and I was worrying about our guys as they prepared to wrestle Oklahoma."

Welcome back Nate! I was wondering why you left an asst. coaching position to return to ISU as a 'Volunteer Asst', but I understand now, you are training for the olympics - good luck and welcome back!

Re: Nate Gallick coming back to ISU

I believe if the Paulson's came back it would be in a similar role to Nate Gallick. Both are very active in competition and their main focus would probably be on training. KJ will need some full time assistants that can help focus on administration, recruiting, practices, etc. on a full time basis.

I wouldn't hold my breath on this. Every new coach hire at a decent wrestling school over the past few years has claimed there's going to be an Olympic training site at their school.

I'll believe it when I see it. I think it's mostly idle chatter.

The difference is that our coach was recently the head olympic coach for the past eight years.

    [QUOTE]

College wrestling teams are allowed 2 full time assistants and 1 volunteer assistant coach. The "volunteer" part is somewhat disingenuous. Nate will still be paid a salary but it will be through working wrestling camps. It won't be as much as the 2 full timers make, however.

Teams also generally have a conditioning coach but their contact with the wrestlers is a bit more limited than the official coaches. They are not allowed in the corner at dual meets.

There are also administrative positions with further limited contact with wrestlers in actual practice. I think we've had 1-2 of these in the past and I think that will continue but to what level, I do not know.

Basically we have 2 more assistants and a strength coach yet to be named. The 2 assistant hires are huge because they, along with the head coach, are the off-campus recruiters.

And he resigned from that job under pressure. That doesn't exactly put ISU in a better position than other schools.

Don't be a hater, Spoon. Right now there's no evidence either way.

I'm still signing up for season tickets when they come round.

Nate has been running some of the workouts since the day Jackson was hired. Not really breaking news here.
