    Which was the greatest ISU team ever?

    There is a thread about an all-ISU team, but which team, do you think was the greatest ISU team ever.

    For example, the 1960 team coached by Clay Stapleton went 7-3 with wins at Nebraska, at Okey State, at K-State and a home win over Oklahoma. The losses were to No. 5 Mizzou, No. 10 Kansas and to Colorado.

    Johnny Major's 1971 team went 8-4, but this team played in the Sun Bowl (losing to Louisana State). The other losses were to No. 1 Nebraska, No. 2 Oklahoma, No. 5 Colorado.

    Earle Bruce had a good three-year run, but his 1976 team reached a No. 14 ranking and defeated No. 7 Mizzou (at their place) and No. 9 Nebraska. The losses were to No. 16 Okey State, No. 3 Oklahoma and at Colorardo.

    The 1977 team went 8-4 with a big win at No. 9 Nebraska. The Clones lost to N.C. State in the Peach Bowl and were ranked as high as No. 16.

    Bruce's 1978 team went 8-4 losing to Texas A&M in the Hall of Fame Bowl. ISU was ranked as high as No. 15 before dropping to No. 19 for the Hall of Fame Bowl.

    Then the dark period began at ISU with Duncan, Criner and Walden as coaches. ISU's next greatest team would be the 2000 Clones when they went 9-3 with Insight.com Bowl win over Pittsburg.

    The 2002 team had potential - 6-1 going into the Oklahoma game and ranked No. 9. We all know how that season ended. 1-6 the rest of the way for a 7-7 overall record

    But but but, how can this be? ISU football never had any success until Danny Mac came along and took us to multiple bowl games.

    1938 - started 7-0-1 and lost the finale to Oklahoma. Six players taken in the 1939 NFL Draft, a number matched only in 1974.

    1944 - 6-1-1, finished literally inches from a conference title.

    1959 - "Dirty Thirty", 7-3, one game away from an Orange Bowl berth.

    I miss the days of throwing oranges on the field after the first win of the season. That made a huge impression on an 8 yr old.

    I would say the '71 team followed by the '76 team, just by looking at them on paper. Those who saw them play and went to Clyde Williams would probably be the best ones to chime in. (not me)

    Re: Which was the greatest ISU team ever?

    My dad always tells me about the 77-78 teams, so I might have to take his word for it in this case.

    Also, I thought the 2005 team had the most talent that an ISU team has had in the last 20 years. Every game we lost that year was because of our own stupid miscues. The only game that year that I felt we were honestly defeated was against TCU in the Houston Bowl and we could have won that game. That season still hurts. THREE OT LOSSES!

    OT games haven't been good to us over the years.

    I might be wrong but didnt we not lose any games by more that like 9 points that year. Also, aside from TCU, i think we lost all the gimme's.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    There is no question for me - this is the greatest 'Clone team ever. The offense was highly ranked at the end of the season (I think they finished #3 in the nation). It was so cool because with tandem QB's Wayne Stanley and Buddy Hardeman, it was like you never worried about 3rd down conversions. Dexter Green was an incredible back.
    And for you folks that weren't there; we had a D-Line comprised of: McFarland + two Stendsrud brothers + Tom Randall.
    We beat a great Nebraska team. Should have beaten CU in Boulder, but we never win there.
    As usual, we got screwed when it came time for bowl game awards, but at that time, there were not many to choose from and when we lost the last game of the season (Ok St) it kinda sealed our fate.
    Kinda unbelievable when you think how strong the Big 8 was in those days; kinda like the SEC today. At one point OU / NU / CU were 1 / 2 / 3 in the rankings.
    The number of B-8 players drafted was the highest of any conference by a mile.
    KU + ISU and K-State were even decent and rated during the season.
