Does Rashon go to the Bench Next year??

With our incoming recruits for next year, this is how I see our starting 5 lookin like.
    C- Hubalek
    PF- Brackins
    SF- W. Johnson
    SG- Taylor
    PG- Dunson/Garrett
It doesnt look like there is going to be much room for Rashon in the starting 5 but it also is good to have a guy like him coming off our bench.

Probably our 6th man, I agree. Not bad when you can have a 6th man like that.

Not sure Brackins starts right away, but he very well might.

Clark should not only watch out for Brackins, but Alex Thompson as well. If he can rebound like Clark is doing this year...but score as well, it will be hard to not have Thompson on the floor quite a bit too.

I think Alex Thompson will be starting in place of Brackins for the beginning of the season

You guys really think Thompson is gonna make that much of an impact.

I think so, because Brackins will need to learn the college game, and Thompson has been practicing with the team already. Brackins will be definitely starting by B12 season

Re: Does Rashon go to the Bench Next year??

I think Clark will start some games and come off the bench some games, depending on who is playing well. His size, experience, and athleticism makes him very flexible, so he will get his minutes. He could see time at the 3 or 4 position, and maybe a little 2, though his ball handling could stand to improve.

McDermott, on his call-in show Monday, said Wesley may end up being a 3 (where Clark currently plays) by the end of his career. I could see Hubalek and Alex Thompson being a nice duo if Brackins isn't ready right away.

Re: Does Rashon go to the Bench Next year??

Next year we are going to be VERY deep. Here is my best projection at the starting 5 (with backups) for the majority of the games (recognizing it will be tweaked a bit at the start while we try to find a good fit).

    PG Garrett/McIntosh
    SG Taylor/Dunson
    SF W. Johnson/R. Clark
    PF A. Thompson/Brackins/C.Johnson
    C Hubalek/Marsden/C.Johnson

I think Boozer and Staiger will redshirt.

Re: Does Rashon go to the Bench Next year??

I think the forward/center situation will be a little trickier than that. First, I think that there is absolutely no way that Marsden will play before C. Johnson. Secondly, I think that A. Thompson is more suited for the center position, but will likely start at the forward. I expect Brackins and C. Johnson will rotate in for the power forward position, and Thompson will slide down to the center or maybe play some PF depending on the size of lineup McDermott wants. Also, I could see Thompson and Brackins having some defensive problems early in the year and occassionally being replaced during the game by the defensive machine Clark.

Clark plays good defense (and McD values D) and will be a senior leader. No doubt in my mind he will start.

Clark is guarding the other teams best player every game. He starts next year for that reason alone. He also will be better with one year in the system. I expect him to start the rest of his carreer.

Re: Does Rashon go to the Bench Next year??

Wesley Johnson was a shooting guard when he signed at Louisiana Monroe. I know he doesn't handle the ball at all this year but what are the odds he could even move to 2??? Could you imagine a line up With WJ, Rahshon, Brackins, Jiri, and Mike Taylor on the floor with guys like Cory Johnson, Diante Garrett, and Dodie Dunson coming off the bench??? Within the exception of Jiri, that has to be the most athletic starting 5 in the big 12 should things shake out that way next year.

Re: Does Rashon go to the Bench Next year??

    Starting lineup:

C-Alex Thompson: rocks Hubalek regularly in practice, an experienced guy who will lead us in rebounds.
PF-Jiri Hubalek: Proving to be valuable this year. Think Martin Rancik his senior year.
SF-Wesley Johnson: Pretty much the only no brainer.
SG-Rahshon Clark: His defense will be his saving grace.
PG-Diante Garrett: Yes, he is good enough to start as a freshman, and will IMMEDIATELY give us a slasher's mentality at the point.

-I expect that at some point in the season Brackins will start. He's not a dud a la Taggart. Think Joseph Jones from Texas A&M, they have comparable styles.

-Mike Taylor will be one of the best 6th men in school history, and his coming off the bench will force him to cut down on turnovers. He'll be our Ben Gordon next year.

-Dodie Dunson will be coming right off the bench with Taylor to spell Garrett or Clark. Needs to improve on consistent three point shooting over the summer, he will be extremely important next year for that reason.

Re: Does Rashon go to the Bench Next year??

I like your analysis Lastuvka. That is, all but the part about Clark being at the SG position. There is absolutely no way that Rahshon will play the 2 position next year unless he becomes Tinsley's apprentice over the offseason. I agree that his defense will definitely keep him heavily in the line-up, but he just doens't have the ball-handling to help take the ball up the court (which is the job of the SG). Also, he can sky high for rebounds, and needs to crash the offensive boards rather than stay back for defensive purposes, which is one of the shooting guards duties.

With that said, no one really knows how good all the new players will be. Who knows, some of our players from this year could see a decline in level of play and some (maybe even Marsden) could show us something that they haven't shown us before. Either way, it's good to have this problem. I can't wait for next year.
